Snohomish County will host a public workshop to discuss potential changes to the day use portion of Kayak Point Regional Park Wed, March 31, 6:30 p.m. at Lake Goodwin Community Club, 17323 42nd Ave. NW. The meeting will be an opportunity for residents and park users to offer feedback on design alternatives. Planning for improvements to the day use portion of the park is being considered in response to maintenance, ecological and user issues that have arisen during the past several years. Easter services at Freeborn Church

Freeborn Lutheran Church will start off Easter Sunday celebration with a free breakfast/brunch April 4, 8:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall. Access is down around the back of the church. Resurrection worship service is at 10 a.m., followed by coffee and cookies. A free Easter egg hunt is set for 11:30 a.m. for ages 12 and younger; bring your own small basket. Position open for engineering services

The Stanwood-Camano School District is looking for professional architectural and engineering services. The scope of services will include providing occasional architectural or engineering advice, consultation, and design work as needed, and as may arise on an occasional basis. Interested firms are invited to submit a statement of qualifications and performance data to enable the administration to determine the firm most qualified to perform the requested services. Relay for Life rally set for next week

A Relay for Life Rally has been set for Tues, April 6, 5:30 p.m. at the Stanwood School District board room. A committee meeting will follow at 6:45. Anyone interested in starting or supporting a team, can contact the relay committee, stanwoodcamanorelay. com.

Warm Beach food closet open Saturday

Warm Beach Food Closet/Food Bank opens to Stanwood-Camano families the first Saturday of each month (April 3) 9 a.m. to noon. The Food Closet is located in the basement (follow the signs) of the Warm Beach Community Church, 9620 188th St NW, Stanwood.

AAUW offers scholarships to locals

Become a beach naturalist

Join WSU Beach Watchers and other volunteers in this two-part training session to learn about Puget Sound inter-tidal organisms in their fragile habitat at Stanwood Public Utility District Fri, April 9, 10 a.m.– 4 p.m. (classroom), and at Kayak Point County Park Fri, April 16, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. (field). Mark calendars for ‘Voices of Hope’

Sun, April 18, 2 p.m., the 14th annual “Voices of Hope” choral benefit concert and bake sale will take place at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Stanwood. All proceeds from the event will benefit Housing Hope’s Lervick Family Village, located in Stanwood. This year marks the 14th anniversary of the opening of Lervick Family Village. Stanwood High School choir director Erik Ronning will serve as emcee of the event, and direct the concert again as well. The program includes performances by local school and church choirs. The bake sale, featuring a variety of homemade goods from Stanwood area residents, immediately follows the concert. St. Cecilia Catholic Church is located at 26900 78th Ave. NW, Stanwood. Please note that parking is not permitted on either side of 78th Ave. NW.

Free renter certification training offered

Volunteers of America is offering a free renter certification training Tues, March 30, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Stanwood Library, 9701 271st St. NW. If you have a problematic rental and/or credit history, you will be guided through training and one-on-one assistance in identifying what is preventing you from obtaining housing. Then work to create a plan to address the past, start fresh, and initiate a positive rental history. The three-hour training will address customized training in landlord/tenant law, overview of what landlords screen for in a tenant, soft skills on how to resolve conflict constructively, and a “tool box” of resources to assist in successfully obtaining housing. The Dispute Resolution Center of Snohomish and Island Counties (DRC) has been providing services to landlords and tenants for more than 23 years. Call DRC to sign up for a class, 425-339-1335.

Tours and cruises is Thursday topic

Catalyst Travel and Holland America will be at the Stanwood Community and Senior Center Thurs, April 15, 10 a.m., to talk about tours and cruises for 2010. There will be question and answer time; you do not have to be a member to take the offered trips. Coffee and snacks will be provided.

Local families needed to host students

ASSE (International Student Exchange Programs) is seeking local host families for international high school boys and girls. Students are 15-18 years of age, and are coming to Stanwood for the upcoming high school year or semester. They are conversant in English, curious and anxious to learn about this country through living as part of a family. Each is insured, have their own spending money and expect to bear their share of household responsibilities, as well as being included in normal family activities and lifestyles. Health programs offered by SVH

HealthQuest programs are provided by Skagit Valley Hospital for educational purposes. An education program for adults with diabetes, either newly diagnosed or for those patients needing extra guidance with diabetes control, is the fourth Monday of each month except May and December, 1 - 3 p.m. The program requires a physician referral and is covered by most insurance companies. The “Look Good, Feel Better” program teaches beauty techniques to women in active treatment for cancer or those who are about to start treatment. Drip irrigation class offered by WSU

Jeff Thompson, master gardener, will explain how to fix your yard for low water usage Thurs, April 8, 1 to 3:30 p.m. and again 6 to 8:30 p.m., at the county extension office in Everett, 600 128 St. SE. Q uilt show and quilt walk this weekend

Fidalgo Island Quilters of Anacortes, will hold their biennial quilt show April 2, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and April 3, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Over 320 traditional quilts, art quilts, and wearable art will be on display at Anacortes Middle School, located on the corner of 22nd and M Avenue. There is an admission, under 12 free. Admission price on Saturday includes admission to the style show. The Quilt Walk is April 1-30, with over 130 pieces displayed in 35 downtown Anacortes businesses.

Foundation accepting grant applications

The Greater Everett Community Foundation is now accepting grant applications for the Arts & Culture Fund, which is “to promote the artistic and cultural development of Snohomish County, helping to ensure the growth of local arts experiences by providing funding and support for diverse, high quality programs.” Grants are made to organizations and artists that serve Snohomish County. Snohomish County Surface Water Management is seeking a volunteer to collect water quality samples and record data for Lake Goodwin. All training and equipment is provided – volunteers only need to have boat access and commit a few hours each month from May through October.
