Windshield on fire truck lost to soft drink

By JEREMIAH O’HAGAN Staff Reporter

The Camano Island Fire and Rescue engine was traveling north on East Camano Drive Sunday night about 10:30 p.m. when the windshield exploded in the driver’s face.

The officer seated next to him got a face-full of soda and a plastic Jack in the Box cup in his lap.

Levon Yengoyan, assistant chief, said the driver remained exceptionally calm, steering the engine to a stop on the side of the road.

Yengoyan said they aren’t sure if the soda was thrown from a passing vehicle or from the side of the road. Not that it matters.

The soda, possibly someone’s idea of hilarity, sent the driver to the hospital, where he was checked for injuries, especially to his eyes.

The engine had to be towed and the windshield replaced, an estimated cost of $1,500, Yengoyan said.

Island County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
