Stanwood students thrive at NW Science Olympiad

Three Stanwood-Camano schools took two teams each to the Northwest Regional Science Olympiad Tournament at Seattle Central Community College, Feb. 27, with outstanding success.

Stanwood High School, Stanwood Middle School and Port Susan Middle School each took two teams.

SHS went up against 21 other high school teams from Tacoma to Bellingham. One team took first place and the other team took sixth place. Each team consists of up to fifteen students, who compete in 23 science and engineering events.

The top finishes have qualified both high school teams for the state Science Olympiad Tournament, at Eastern Washington University in Cheney April 10, to compete against the top 20 high school teams from across the state. The team that finishes first at the state competition will compete in the National Science Olympiad Tournament at the University of Illinois May 21-22.

Stanwood Middle School took two teams, with 31 students in 6th-8th grades and they finishedfourth and 10th out of 18 teams. The fourth place team will be heading to state, according to coaches Cherae Almanza, Gaylen Brulé and Kym Shoemaker.
