Got smoke detector batteries?

By JEREMIAH O’HAGAN Staff Reporter

Residents in Madrona, Country Club, Camaloch or Utsalady neighborhoods can expect a fire truck full of Boy Scouts bringing batteries to their door this weekend.

Rather than merely reminding people to change their smoke detector batteries at the same time they change their clocks, Camano Island Fire and Rescue (CIFR) volunteer firefighter Rusty Pfeiffer thought it’d be cool to go a step further.

“I heard about the idea from friends in other communities and thought this was something the island could benefit from,” Pfeiffer said.

So, he rounded up some fellow firefighters and a bunch of Boy Scouts from troops 86 and 289, and together they brainstormed ideas of how to find the money for the 500 batteries they would need.

Camano Plaza IGA stepped up and provided money to match CIFR funds. Cha-ching.

The crews will be canvassing the neighborhoods between 1 and 5 p.m. each day (Madrona and Country Club on Saturday, Camaloch and Utsalady on Sunday), and will be happy to change batteries.

Residents can contact the administration office at 387-1512 or simply flag down a fire truck on the street in their neighborhood (they’ll be traveling slowly).
