County reaps what it sows

Dear Editor:

I see that Island County is running out of money, and that there are reportedly only two options: increase tax rates or cut expenses.

But there is a third option: increasing the tax base by encouraging development of commercial and industrial projects. Instead, the county has a history of thwarting those projects.

For example, take Bay View on Camano.

If that project had been allowed to proceed it would now be paying more than $200,000 a year in property taxes, plus much more in excise, sales and hotel/motel taxes. And it would be adding nothing to the county’s expenses.

Now, the county only gets property taxes on raw land.

Yes, the county is indeed paying the price. It reaps what it sows.
