Cleverly invented stories
The day after the U.S. and Canadian Olympic hockey teams played each other for Olympic gold, a wide-smiling Canadian friend of mine brought me a newspaper from Vancouver, B.C., with highlights of the game as a souvenir.
Millions saw the game and I now possess a written record of it.
There is no doubt in my mind of the reliability of this report, since it is so well attested to by so many eye-witnesses.
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, wrote: “We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.
For He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to Him from the majestic glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with Him on the sacred mountain” (2 Peter 1:16-18).
The Bible is a written record of events that took place in history regarding Jesus Christ. It is not a cleverly invented story, as the eyewitnesses can attest to.
They heard and saw many things about Jesus that left them only one conclusion, that He is indeed the Son of God, whom the Father loves and is well pleased with.
And so Peter and the other eyewitnesses encourage us to take to heart what they have written, saying: “...you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts” (2 Peter 1:19).
The morning star is the last visible star on the horizon just before sunrise. It symbolizes the fact that the night is all but over and a new day is about to dawn. May the light of Christ fill your heart today as you look to Him. You can trust the written record of the Bible. It is not some cleverly invented story, but eyewitness accounts of His majesty.
