In response to readers’
requests, the
NEWS will
run weekly updates on the
General Mark Clark Bridge
project on Camano Island
and the SR532 corridor
project in Stanwood.
This week, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews continue building a drainage pond near the intersection of SR 532 and Pioneer Highway in Stanwood.
Most of the work will not be visible to drivers until the week of Feb. 22- 26, when crews will begin excavating the pond and building a wall.
A pedestrian detour has been set up around the construction zone and the sidewalk has been closed. Signs have been set up to direct people through the detour.
On Tuesday, crews began work on an embankment at the southeast corner of 12th Avenue NW and SR 532. The area will be cleared of vegetation before construction begins on the embankment itself. This work will be completed mostly at night, and will continue for several weeks.
On the new Mark Clark Bridge, crews are preparing the installed girders for the next phase of construction, building the bridge deck. This work is being completed during the day and doesn’t require lane closures.
Drivers may notice netting around the existing bridge. This is to ensure no birds nest under the bridge, keeping them safe from displacement when the structure is removed this fall.
