Larsen to speak at Viking Saturday

Congressman Rick Larsen is guest speaker at the Viking Restaurant Sat, Feb. 13, 9:30 a.m. for the breakfast meeting of the Stanwood Democrats. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. Congressman Larsen is the incumbent running against Snohomish County Councilman Koster for the 10th District seat. There is a no host breakfast at 9 a.m. The Stanwood Democrats’ business meeting will begin after the congressman speaks.

PUD closed to public Monday, March 1

As part of its conversion to a new customer information system, the PUD will be closed to the public Mon, March 1. Customers should plan ahead and call or visit local PUD offices on other days. Customers should also expect longer than normal wait times temporarily after the conversion. The utility will not disconnect power on this date. In the event of a major storm, the PUD will delay the conversion process to another date.

‘Sweetheart’ bingo on Valentine’s Day

The Silvana Fair Board is sponsoring a bingo night Sun, Feb. 14, 6 p.m., at Viking Hall in downtown Silvana, 1331 Pioneer Highway. “Bring your sweetheart for a fun night of bingo,” said board members. Special Valentine prizes will be awarded. Refreshments available and there is a cost. For more information, call 652-8682.

Sweethearts invited to dine February 14

Cedarhome Baptist open house Sunday

Cedarhome Baptist Church will be hosting an open house Sun., Feb. 21 at both morning services, 8:30 and 11 a.m. A free hot dog lunch will be served following the last service. At 1 p.m., a concert by “Step of Faith” will be presented. This is a full band fronted by four young women, including Aliya Kunz from Camano Island. Collin Caruthers of Cedarhome Baptist is a bass player in the band.

AARP driver safety program Thursday

An AARP Driver Safety class is scheduled for Feb. 17 and 18, at Skagit Medical Center in Stanwood, with class time 1 - 5 p.m. both days. This two-day class for adults 50 years of age or over allows the participants to work through an interactive curriculum emphasizing defensive driving techniques. There is a cost, and a discount is extended to AARP members, to cover the cost of the materials. Washington state requires auto insurance carriers to extend a discount for those who complete the course. Check with your carrier for more information. Students can register by calling 629-7403. The next class will be at Camano Island Senior and Community Center Feb. 25 and 26; class time is 9 a.m.-1 p.m. both days, and students can register by calling 387-0222.

Gearing up for Silvana fair auction

The annual Silvana Fair Board auction is Sat., Match 13 at Viking Hall in Silvana. Board members are again this year asking for donations from local merchants. “We appreciate your continued support over the years,” they said, “which in turn allows us to put on a family fun country fair at a free admission price.” This year’s auctioneers will be George Magnochi and David Fenton. Anyone wishing to donate, call 652-8682. Due to limited space, the board is requesting only new merchandise. The silent auction begins at 5 p.m., and the live auction at 6.

Special worship to prepare for Easter

Freeborn Lutheran Church invites the public to special worship services every Sunday, 10 a.m., in preparation for Easter Sunday April 4. Worship is led by Pastor Donald Brekhus, former pastor of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Stanwood. Freeborn is located just off Exit 215 east of I-5 and 300th Street.

NAMI-Northsound support group meets

NAMI-Northsound, a support group for family and friends of the mentally ill, will meet Mon, Feb. 15, 6:30 p.m. in Stanwood United Methodist Church. Information and sharing is done at meetings held the third Monday of the month for all those who are interested. For more information, call 287-2519,-387-5705 or 629-2282. Mark calendars for MD fundraiser

A Muscular Dystrophy “Cabaret” fundraiser will be held at Stanwood Elementary Feb. 19, 7-9 p.m.; tickets include a raffle ticket. There will be entertainment and homemade desserts. Many businesses in the community have already donated items and money for the raffle. More details published later.

PTA seeks donors for auction

Shoe collections through February

Science teams to showcase events

Sun, Feb. 21, the three science schools that currently host science teams will be “showcasing” the events they are preparing for the regional and hopefully state tournaments. Beginning at 3 p.m., the afternoon will also include desserts for attendees to try and also to take home, as the teams work to offset costs of the competitions. Stanwood High School, Stanwood Middle School and Port Susan Middle School students will be on hand at this extravaganza to be held at Stanwood Middle School. Homemade desserts will be available for donations to be sampled by the visiting public. There will also be some of the same desserts available for auction. The public is welcome, and there is no admission fee.

Chamber of Commerce hosts speaker

Thurs, Feb. 11, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., the Chamber of Commerce will hold its meeting in the Stanwood Camano School District Admin Bldg. Featured guest speaker is Dan Koffman, who will make a presentation on how to “Top spin your business.” There is a cost for a lunch catered by Angel of the Winds.

Learn about Scandinavian heritage

Appreciate and learn about Scandinavian heritage by attending the Daughters of Norway, Ingeborg Lodge 43 meeting Sat, Feb. 13, 10 a.m., Sons of Norway Hall, 9910 270th St. NW, Stanwood. Care for gardening tools workshop

WSU Skagit County Extension Master Gardeners, in partnership with WSU - Mount Vernon NWREC, presents a WSU Know & Grow workshop, “Caring for your gardening tools” Tues, March 2, 1 to 2:30 p.m. at WSU Sakuma Auditorium, 16650 State Route 536 (Memorial Highway). Do you have a dull shovel, stiff pruners, or a rusty hoe? Local Master Gardeners will teach you how to sharpen and maintain your garden tools. Proper use and safety will also be covered. Look ahead to March quilt tour

A quilt tour with the theme of “Smooth Sailing,” is March 24- 27 with 15 shops participating. Granny’s of Stanwood is among them. There will be a quilt show, and a chance to collect a custom designed pattern for free. Start the tour at any one of the shops located in Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties. Receive a free nautical quilt block pattern designed by each shop; one block pattern at each shop and see a quilt designed using all the nautical blocks. Time is 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Local students can apply for scholarship

The Stanwood-Camano AAUW will award $2,500 scholarships each to three eligible local students who have completed two years of college. Applications are due by April 30. AAUW is actively recruiting new members to join the local branch, with an invitation to attend their next general meeting Thurs, Feb. 11, 7 p.m. at the Stanwood United Methodist Church, 27128 102nd Drive NW, parking available behind the Floyd Norgaard building. Val Schroeder, nationally recognized specialist in The Wildlife Habitat Program, will speak on “The sustainable lifestyle,” leading a discussion on creation of wildlife habitats. Co-presenter Linda Livengood will speak on “The environmentally friendly home,” demonstrating how small changes can make positive differences. The Economic Development Association of Skagit County presents the next installments of its education series, free, Feb. 11, on employee benefits options. In this edition of the Brown Bag Lunch Series, hear from a benefits professional about intriguing options and ways to bring value to yourself and to your employees.
