Five Spartan boy wrestlers win matches

Nick Kinsman, Jarred Studley and Wade Weinert built a 10-5 lead for the Spartan wrestling squad (1- 7 in league, 2-9 overall) last Thursday night, but only Joe Eidsness and Clayton Jacks scored points after that, and the local grapplers fell 50-22 to Monroe in the final Wes- Co 4A North match of the 2009-2010 season.
Kinsman, the Sparts’ 125 pounder, opened the evening’s activities by scoring a first-round takedown, a second-round reversal, a penalty point and another takedown before securing a reversal in the third period to grab a 9-3 decision.
Jarred Studley racked up a 10-2 major decision worth four team points in the 130- pound weight class. Those ten points were accumulated via a takedown, a pair of reversals and two separate two-point nearfalls.
Wade Weinert shut out his opponent 6-0 in the 140- pound bout. His reversal and pair of takedowns over the course of the six-minute match were more than enough to guarantee the Spartans’ third victory of the evening.
Three matches later team captain Joe Eidsness (160) quickly dispatched his Bearcat opponent with a 32-second pin and six more points for his team.
The final triumph for the local grapplers came at the hands of Clayton Jacks (189) who marked up his second consecutive pinfall after earning his varsity spot just over a week ago. “Clayton was our wrestler of the week following those two pins,” said head coach Ray Mather, “after winning his wrestle-off to get into the varsity lineup.
“Joe and Jarred are our leaders this year,” he continued. “Wade, Nick and freshman Zach Schut (who did not compete against Monroe because of an injury) are really making improvements as well. Our team is wrestling better and better with the athletes we have,” he concluded.
The District I 4A Wrestling Tournament begins this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5 and 6 at Marysville- Pilchuck High School. For information contact the SHS athletic director’s office at 360-629-2123.
