Spartan win over Monroe clinches district for cagers
By beating Monroe 64-52 and thereby clinching a 4A District I playoff berth last Friday night, the Spartan boys’ hoops squad (10-2 in league, 10-6 overall) now looks forward to facing the last team that defeated them – the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks. Lady Sparts yield to Monroe Bearcats second-half pressure
With an intensified defensive effort, the Lady Spartans (4-8 in league, 6- 10 overall) gave the favored Monroe Bearcats a run for their money for two-and-ahalf quarters, but the hosts’ own defensive schemes eventually caused the Sparts to lose their concentration and the game, 54-37, in the local cagers’ only WesCo 4A North contest last week. The annual eighth grade Port Susan Middle (PSMS) versus Stanwood Middle school rivalry basketball game took place recently at PSMS, ending in a convincing victory for PSMS. Full Story
Casey Mather named ‘Outstanding Wrestler’
Lady Spartan grappler Casey Mather, a state qualifier last season as a freshman, decisioned this season’s number one-ranked girl in the 112-pound classification by a resounding 9-2 score in the finals of Jackson High’s Wolfpack Invitational over the weekend. Full Story
Swimmers prepare for district and state meets
Stanwood’s boys’ swim team concluded the regular season with a tie and a loss to non-league opponents Lynden and Sehome, respectively, last week.

Five Spartan boy wrestlers win matches
Nick Kinsman, Jarred Studley and Wade Weinert built a 10-5 lead for the Spartan wrestling squad (1- 7 in league, 2-9 overall) last Thursday night, but only Joe Eidsness and Clayton Jacks scored points after that, and the local grapplers fell 50-22 to Monroe in the final Wes- Co 4A North match of the 2009-2010 season.
