Herbert E. Thayer Jr.

Herbert E. Thayer Jr., 77, longtime resident of Camano Island, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, from cancer which he had been battling for about a year.
He was born Dec. 26, 1932 in Lewistown, Montana. He grew up in Montana and in 1950 he joined the National Guard at Ridgefield, Washington, and served his country for one year at which time he was honorably discharged for medical reasons.
Herbert married Francis Ida Girvin in 1951 and in 1960 they moved to the Northwest.
He worked in construction in Seattle for J.W. Woody, installing gas lines all over the Seattle area for about 10 years.
Herbert came to Camano Island in the early 1970s and drove school bus for a while and worked in construction developing properties all over the island in the ‘70s and ‘80s.
He retired medically in 1993 and lived a quiet life in the Stanwood area.
Herbert is survived by four sons, Toney, Bret, Bart and Tim, and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Camano Island.
