Spelling bee goes multiple rounds at Elger Bay school

Josie Wells and Sarah Bent Josie Wells and Sarah Bent Four fifth-graders, Makenna Hiatt, Lauren Uhrich, Josie Wells and Sarah Bentz and one thirdgrader, Heidi Glassett, buzzed through multiple eighth-grade words before Wells took all with “L-UX U-R-Y.”

Bentz just missed with the word “indelible” and will be Wells’ alternate, representing Elger Bay Elementary School at the Skagit Valley Herald’s 34th annual regional spelling bee March 13 in Mount Vernon.

The winner of the regional competition will attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in May.

While the third-grader, Heidi, is not eligible to participate in the regional spelling bee, she is well on her way for next year.

Fifth-grade teacher Ms. Cynthia Wright was once again the “Queen Bee” coordinator.

PTA provided trophies and certificates for the winner and alternate and West Side Pizza provided pizzas for all of the classroom winners.

The spelling bee was held in the school gym two days in a row, thanks to P.E. teacher Mr. Kurt Blom giving up his classroom.
