With steady hand, stark colors and a creative touch, KelliJo Nauman, senior at Stanwood High School (SHS), captured the looming mountains, peaceful valley and flowing waters surrounding Stanwood.
Her gallery: the Stanwood Police Department.
Her subject: the patch her father, Deputy Rick Nauman, proudly wears on the shoulder of his uniform.
In fulfilling the requirements for her senior project, not only did Nauman paint the department’s patch, she created a work of art seen by hundreds of visitors to the station each week and countless drivers and pedestrians passing by.
The humble artist credits her father for the inspiration.
“It was my dad’s idea,” she said.
The proud father credits his daughter for making it happen.
“She’s got the talent,” he said.
To create the piece, Nauman used an overhead projector to trace the outline of the image. Using a combination of water-based and oil-based acrylics, Nauman painstakingly mixed the appropriate colors to match the patch. The painting took more than 30 hours to complete.
“She’s a perfectionist,” said her father.
Because her canvas was the lobby wall, Nauman had to work on the project after hours. On occasion, lighting became an issue.
It was much harder to paint without natural light, she said.
The result of her work brings a smile to her father’s face.
“It makes me proud,” said Deputy Nauman. “The officers and staff think it’s fantastic. It certainly makes a nice statement for a great area.”
The current patch was updated in 2009 from a previous design displayed on patrol cars in the `80s.
Even though Nauman has attended two years of graphic arts classes at SHS, this is her first painting.
“I learned a lot working with paints,” said Nauman.
“And, how to paint while hanging off the side of a ladder,” said her father.
For now, Nauman plans to develop her artistic skill as a hobby rather than a profession. Upon graduation she plans to seek a career as a dental hygienist.
For the Naumans, the project is special.
“I was involved with the remodel of this building,” said Deputy Nauman. “KelliJo added the final touch.”
Nauman has one more detail to add to the painting after a few minor touch-ups … her signature.
