Stanwood’s boys’ swim team (8-2 overall) pulled a trifecta last week as they outswam Archbishop Murphy, Snohomish and Glacier Peak in a pair of home meets at the sports club pool.
After the waves had settled, the Spartans had posted two state-qualifying times, set a new school record in the 200 individual medley, secured two more district-qualifying marks (making it 11 qualifiers so far) and established 44 season-best clockings.
Against the Wildcats on Tuesday, the Sparts proved victorious in every event except the 200 freestyle relay to win going away, 103-67.
The following teams and individuals grabbed first places: the 200 medley relay team of Justin Murrell, Tim Hammer, Matt Roe and Cole Farnsworth (1:52), Hammer in the 200 free (1:52), Roe in the 200 individual medley with a state-qualifying, school record time of 2 minutes, 1.34 seconds and in the 100 butterfly with another state-qualifying mark of 55.21 seconds, David Escobar in the 50 free (24.4) and the 100 free (53.6), Murrell in the 500 free (5:30) and the 100 backstroke (1:03), Hammer in the 100 breaststroke (1:08) and the 400 free relay squadron of James McCune, D. Escobar, Murrell and Roe (3:43).
Seconds were earned by McCune in the 100 breast (1:09), the 200 free relay quartet of Farnsworth, D. Escobar, McCune and Hammer (1:40), Farnsworth in the 500 freestyle (5:33) and the 200 medley relay foursome of Jacob Land, Cameron Chaplik, Kevin Escobar and Aaron Rice (2:00).
Taking third were Land (100 fly, 1:05; 100 back, 1:10), Farnsworth (200 IM, 2:15), Chaplik (breast, 1:13), the 200 free relay team of Bo Luce, Land, Chaplik and K. Escobar (1:50).
Fourths and fifths, worth two and one points, respectively, went to Austin Wehr (5th, 200 IM, 2:43), Rice (4th, 200 free, 2:23), McCune (5th, 50 free, 27.7), K. Escobar (4th, 100 fly, 1:08; 4th, 100 back, 1:11) and Chaplik (5th, 100 free, 1:01).
“Our first-year swimmers are stepping up and starting score good points for the team in these close meets and a few have qualified for the district meet,” noted co-coach Art Wiper.
During the tri-meet with Snohomish (108-62) and Glacier Peak (110-59), the computerized results incorrectly scored several events.
Individual and team placements will follow each Spartan’s time with his place against the Panthers first and the Grizzlies second.

“We had some great races today,” agreed co-coach Nancy Rink. “James McCune dropped his time six seconds to qualify for district in the 200 IM and Kevin Escobar made the district time in the 100 fly by two seconds after repeated tries in the last three meets.
“The boys are continuing to improve. We are looking forward to next week with two big meets against Lynden and Sehome for the boys to improve their times.”
“Our biggest goal is to keep our kids healthy,” said Wiper. “It’s a tough time and they’ve been pushed hard. We really miss one of our captains, Pender Rink. He has been out sick for most of the season. The team really misses him, especially because they are having to swim the 500 free, Pender’s favorite event.”
