Ashlee Douglas was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle last Wednesday, following a fateful encounter with a vehicle near the intersection of S. East Camano Drive and Karen Way on Camano Island.
Douglas suffered a broken pelvis and other injuries, said Trooper Keith Leary of the Washington State Patrol. At the time of transport, her condition was categorized as life threatening.
Medics on scene were concerned about a possible head injury, said Darin Reid, deputy chief of Stanwood- Camano Fire Department.
However, Douglas’s injuries turned out less critical than anticipated, and she was discharged from Harborview on Saturday.
Washington State Patrol is investigating the collision, which occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m.
Douglas disembarked from a bus and was passing to the rear of the vehicle to cross the street, Leary said. She made eye contact with the driver of the vehicle behind the bus, then crossed between the two and was struck by a car traveling in the opposite direction.
Leary said the driver of the car that struck Douglas attempted to veer away from the girl and ended up in someone’s front yard.
“The preliminary investigation estimates the vehicle’s speed at 40 mph,” Leary said. The speed limit along that stretch of highway is 50 mph, so excessive speed was not a factor.
