Crews continue installing smaller girders
By JEREMIAH O’HAGAN Staff Reporter
In response to readers’
requests, the
NEWS will run weekly updates on
the General Mark Clark
Bridge project on Camano
Island and the SR532 corridor
project in Stanwood.
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews continue to set a total of 10 additional girders in place on the new Mark Clark Bridge.
Five girders will interlock with each side of the center span, connecting it to the roadway. The first two were installed Thursday, on the east end of the bridge. The remaining three girders on the east side will be installed this Thursday. Girders on the west side of the bridge will be installed the last week in January and the first week in February.
These girders are much shorter than the first seven and will not require lane closures, although drivers may experience minor delays as the girders move through town and are set in place by cranes.
In February, WSDOT crews will begin work in Stanwood, between the SR 532 viaduct bridge and the Mark Clark Bridge. The crews will relocate utilities first, in preparation for upgrading sidewalks and driveways, installing street lighting, adding turn lanes and improving drainage.
