Citing the need for a “less intrusive government” in a statement released Wednesday, Snohomish County Councilman John Koster, 58, officially announced his campaign to represent Washington’s 2nd Congressional District.
Last November, Koster fended off challenger Ellen Hiatt Watson to remain on the county council for a third term.
Incumbent Democrat Rick Larsen
is currently serving his fourth term as a member of the House of Representatives. The 2nd Congressional District includes northern Snohomish County, and encompasses all of
Island, Skagit, San Juan and Whatcom counties.
Koster, a Republican, said his run for Congress in November’s general election “will offer voters a clear ideological choice between his steady conservative political approach to that of the ‘progressive’ socialist agenda of the incumbent.”
This is not the first time the two have squared off.
In the 2000 general election, Larsen gained 50.1 percent of the vote over Koster’s 45.93 percent to earn the congressional seat.
Larsen currently serves on the House Armed Services Committee, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Small Business Committee.
