Thereafter, the local aquanauts used their depth to guarantee the 108-67 Western Conference 4A North victory.

Tim Hammer and Matt Roe paced the Sparts with two individual wins apiece. Hammer took the 500 freestyle with a 5:11 time and the 200 individual-medley with a clocking of 2:08 while Roe won the 100 backstroke (1:00) and the 100 butterfly (58.0).

Both young men were members of two victorious relay squads as well. The two teamed with Tyler Swanson and Cole Farnsworth for a meet-ending triumph in the 400 free relay (3:44) after earlier swimming with James McCune and freshman David Escobar on the relay quartet that won the 200-medley relay race (1:49). Escobar also sprinted to victory in the 50 free (24.4).

The eighth first-place time was turned in by Mc- Cune, Farnsworth, Swanson and Escobar when they combined to take the 200 free relay in one minute, 41 seconds.

Meanwhile second-year swimmer Cameron Chaplik, a junior, qualified for the district meet in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:15 clocking, good enough for third overall in the race.

“It’s great to be back in competition after a three week layoff,” admitted cohead coach Art Wiper. “We had a few good times, but we still haven’t reached our potential.”

Second places went to Spartans McCune in the 100 breast (1:11) and the 200 individual medley (2:29), Swanson in the 100 free (53.8) and Farnsworth in the 200 free (2:01).

Jacob Giesbrecht (2:27 in the 200 freestyle), Jacob Land (1:15, 100 backstroke), the 200 medley relay foursome of Land, Chaplik, Farnsworth and Kevin Escobar (2:04), Swanson (25.7, 50 free), Kevin Escobar (1:10, 100 butterfly), David Escobar (54.0, 100 free) and the quartet of Casey O’Heren, Kenny Fenley, Land and Giesbrecht as a 400 free relay squadron (4:34) all earned third places during the meet.

Fourths went to Austin Wehr (7:34, 500 free), Fenley (2:26, 200 free) and Chaplik (1:16, 100 fly).

Taking fifth individually were Sparts Fenley (1:25, 100 breast), O’Heren (1:28, 100 back), Land (1:00, 100 free) and Kevin Escobar (28.8, 50 free), all of whom scored a point toward their team’s eventual victory.

“We had 14 season best times at Cascade even though they do not have blocks, which makes a slower pool,” noted cocoach Nancy Rink. “We are looking to get three of our varsity swimmers back in the meet line-up after being out sick this week. We could really use them for the Lake Stevens meet (today, Tues., Jan. 12), where there will be some very close races and fast times.

“Gunnar Guddal, one of our first year swimmers, dropped over 12 seconds in his 100 free. That is a big drop for this meet,” added Rink.
