Nighttime lane closures this week

In response to readers’
requests, the
NEWS will run weekly updates on
the General Mark Clark
Bridge project on Camano
Island and the SR532 corridor
project in Stanwood.
This Wednesday and Thursday (Jan. 13,14), crews for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will set a temporary barrier beginning construction on the second new eastbound truck-climbing lane on SR 532 between Pioneer Highway and 72nd Avenue NW.
According to Dave Chesson, spokesman for WSDOT, motorists should expect lane closures from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. both nights. Flaggers will direct traffic through the work zone.
The barrier is being set to protect WSDOT employees working close to the roadway.
During the day on Thursday, crews will deliver and install two of the 10 smaller girders for the new Mark Clark Bridge. The girders weigh 101,000 pounds and are 85 feet long.
No lane closures are necessary while they are delivered and set. However, commuters may experience minor congestion and slower-moving traffic due to the visual distraction, said Chesson.
“The girders will arrive as an oversized load, versus the super load for the larger ones,” he said. “Transporting them into town will have less of an impact on traffic than previous deliveries.”
Two- to three- girders per week are scheduled to arrive over the next four weeks.
