Camwood Players has announced auditions for the next show, “The Foreigner,” to be held Tues, Jan., 7-9 p.m. at the Stanwood Library. Parts are available for one woman in her 20s or 30s, and four men of various ages. Auditions will be cold readings from the script. Director is Ray Riches. The show will run in March. Former editor to speak on publishing

Wed, Jan. 13, former editor and publisher of the Stanwood Camano News, Dave Pinkham, will speak about the role of a community newspaper, in the Camano Multi-Purpose Building, 141 East Camano Drive, 7 p.m. One of his topics is about the relationship between readers and the producer of a community newspaper. Open to all, bring observations, comments and questions. Presented by the Camano Island Democrats.

Christmas tree recycling by Scouts

Scout Troop 46 of Camano Island is offering its annual “tree-cycling” event Sat, Jan. 9. Drop off trees at Camano Plaza between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., or call 387-6900, to schedule a pick-up, or for information. If you received an envelope, have your tree by the curb ready for pick up Saturday morning. Donations are gladly accepted.

Basketball tryouts for grade schoolers

Girls AAU Spring League Basketball tryouts will be held from 3:30 -5 p.m. Sun, Jan. 10 at the Stanwood High School main gym. Ron Young to speak on Middle East

Ron Young, who staffs the National Interreligious Leadership Initiative for Middle East Peace (NILI), will share reflections at 10 a.m. after the no-host breakfast at 9 a.m. Sat, Jan. 9, at the Viking Restaurant in Stanwood. He will speak on prospects for peace following a December 2009 trip to Israel/Palestine with 20 Jewish, Muslim and Christian national religious leaders. Ron founded the US Interreligious Committee for Peace in the Middle East in 1987, and has lectured and taught on the Israeli-Palestinian issue for 25 years.

‘Bad Luck & Trouble’ at Leatherheads

Music recital by Stanwood graduate

A 2006 Stanwood High School graduate, Graham Logen, will give a 3 p.m. bassoon recital with piano accompaniment Sun, Jan. 10, at Stanwood United Methodist Church, 27128 102nd Drive NW. Choral ensemble appears in LaConner

Seattle Pro Music, the critically acclaimed choral ensemble directed by Karen P. Thomas, will perform, “Eastern Lights: Music of Asia and the Pacific,” Sat, Jan. 9, 7:30 p.m. at La Conner’s Maple Hall. Presented by La Conner Institute of Performing Arts, tickets can be purchased at the Next Chapter Bookstore at First and Commercial streets in La Conner (across from Maple Hall), or by calling the bookstore, 360-466-2665. A brief pre-performance lecture presentation on the evening’s program will begin at 7 p.m. in Maple Hall.

Jazz night at Stanwood Highschool

The community is invited to an evening of jazz Mon, Jan. 11, 7 p.m., presented in the Performing Arts Center at Stanwood High School. The concert includes performances by Stanwood Middle School stage band, Port Susan’s stage band, the SHS Jazz Band and Camano Junction, with SHS Band Director Doug Morasch sitting in. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. Bring old, broken or used cell phones for a recycling fundraiser.

Famous author to give talks

Richard Bach, well-known author of “Jonathon Livingston Seagull” and “Illusions,” as well as many other books, will be speaking at Out of the Blue Aviation in Arlington Sun, Jan. 10. A long-time pilot, many of Bach’s books have an aviation theme, including his latest “Hypnotising Maria.” He will be talking about writing, flying, and his unique perspective on life. Brochures and order forms are now available for the Snohomish Conservation District’s annual conservation plant sale March 5 and 6 at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe. Free car-care clinic reservations open

Twin City Collision offers a free car-care clinic 11 a.m. Sat, Jan. 9, when community members are welcome to learn how to keep their vehicle running efficiently, how to change a tire, what questions to ask when hiring a mechanic, what are your rights as a customer, what regular maintenance needs to be performed and how to improve gas mileage, among other things.
