“The ball went in the basket.”
That’s how Lady Spartan Dennis Kloke succinctly summarized his girls’ basketball victory over Inglemoor.
His team’s 44 percent (27-of-61) field goal percentage for the game was a refreshing break from their usual output this season – and that really made a difference in how his club performed Tuesday evening against the Vikings.
A talented team, this assemblage of youngsters, but they have failed to finish any number of shots, whether from three-point range or close in, and that has led to their demise in their three early-season losses.
This time, however, the local lasses (2-2 in league, 3-3 overall) consistently found the bottom of the net and four of them tallied double figures in the 71- 63 nonleague win. Senior Kallen Shaughnessy added to the onslaught with nine counters.
Sophomores Samantha Kelleigh (20 points), Brenda Bingham (13) and Jade Borseth (12) joined freshman post Rachel Swartz (11) in leading the Sparts over the Vikings from the Kingco Conference.
Tarah Murphy, with four points, and junior teammate Corinne Teichgrab (2) also contributed offensively for the Spartans.
The previous night, Stanwood’s girls suffered through a horrendous second quarter, scoring just three points, and eventually lost to archrival Arlington 54-46.
Rachel Swartz still managed 16 points while Borseth and Bingham added 11 counters apiece, but the Eagles outscored the Sparts by 10 in that second frame and that proved to be the difference in the WesCo 4A North contest.
Tarah Murphy 4, Samantha Kelleigh 2 and Shaughnessy 2 also scored for Stanwood.
