One teen dead, four injured in wreck

By JEREMIAH O’HAGAN Staff Reporter

Mason Derrick Mason Derrick Around 2 p.m. on Sunday, five teenagers, all current students or recent graduates of Stanwood High School (SHS), were piled in a car and speeding down 15th Avenue at an estimated 85 mph.

They crashed.

Mason Derrick, the 19-year-old driver and a 2008 graduate of SHS, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Two male passengers were ejected from the vehicle and suffered life-threatening injuries, said Rebecca Hover, spokeswoman for Snohomish County Sheriff’s office. They were both airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

One, a 19-year-old man and also a 2008 graduate of SHS, remains in serious condition.

The second passenger ejected from the vehicle was a 17-year-old boy. He too sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Harborview, where he remains in critical condition. He is a SHS student and lives on Camano Island.

The two other passengers were 15-year-old girls. One extracted herself from the vehicle while the other remained trapped inside.

North County Regional Fire Authority “worked hard at gaining access into the vehicle by removing the roof, doors and other parts of the car,” said Christian Davis, battalion chief.

Both girls sustained serious injuries, but not lifethreatening. They were taken to local hospitals for treatment. None of the passengers’ names have been released.

Hover said the posted speed limit on that section of 15th Avenue in Arlington is 35 mph.
