JUANITA H. WAGNER

MAY 26, 1920 - DEC. 10, 2009

Juanita Hubbard (Billy) Wagner died at her home on Camano Island, Dec. 10, 2009. She was born in Nevada City, Calif., in 1920, the youngest child of John Van der Veer Hubbard and Rose Dee Hubbard.

She got a degree in chemistry at University of California, Berkeley.

During World War II she worked on the Manhattan project, first in California and then at Oak Ridge, Tenn. She met Edward Lewis Wagner on the project.

After the war they went to graduate school at Brown University. Ed and later Billy taught chemistry at Washington State University.

They had four children, Wilhemina, Christina, Christopher and Kelvin.

After Ed died, Billy went to law school at the University of Washington at age 60.

She moved to Camano in the early 1980s.

After getting her law degree, she worked for the EPA. She ran for state legislature twice, and was on the state Board of Medical Examiners.

She served on the Camano Water Association board of directors for years and was president.

She is survived by children Wilhemina, Christopher, Kelvin, daughter-inlaw Gail, and granddaughter Tia, age 5, niece Joanne Jacka, and Joanne’s daughter and granddaughters.

A celebration of life for Juanita will be held at the Camano Country Club, 1243 S. Beach Drive on Camano Island, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29.
