Bridge girders arrive for Christmas
Crews are installing seven huge bridge girders this week at the new SR 532 General Mark Clark Bridge.
Drivers should be prepared for lane and complete road closures on SR 532 between I-5 and Camano Island starting after 10 p.m. Dec. 21, 22, 23, 28 and 29.
Each girder is the length of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Full Story
Mark Clark Bridge fire
Flames sprouted from the tent intended to help cure the concrete pier caps on the new Mark Clark Bridge project about 10 p.m. Tuesday night.
Christian Davis, battalion chief for North County Regional Fire Authority, said the cause was most likely a propane heater set up under the tent to help dry some concrete. Full Story
North County responds to two fires in one night
North County Regional Fire Authority responded to two residential fires last Thursday night.
The first fire occurred at a home in the area of 180th and 84th, near Warm Beach.
One engine and one tender responded to the fire, whose source appeared to be electrical, said Christian Davis, battalion chief for North County. Full Story
Camano Island man booked for buying liquor for minors
Stanwood Police responded
to the following
calls last week.
• A 21-year-old Camano Island man was arrested Dec. 11 in the 27000 block of 92nd Avenue NW for supplying liquor to two minors. He was booked into Snohomish County Jail. Full Story
H1N1 complications lead to another SnoCo death
Health officials announced Dec. 15, the sixth death within six weeks of a Snohomish County resident due to complications of H1N1 influenza.
An Everett man in his 20s died during the second week of December.
There were no known underlying health issues.
To date, 96 Snohomish County residents have been hospitalized for H1N1 since mid-September. Full Story

Snow day for schools
Snow and cold temperatures created slick conditions last Monday morning — slippery enough for the Stanwood-Camano School District to cancel classes.

Espresso stand burglar cooperative, confesses
A 26-year-old Stanwood woman confessed involvement in the Oct. 26 burglary of Country Mudd espresso stand.
Police Chief Ty Trenary said officers had discovered signs of forced entry, and determined a cash register and a safe were taken during the robbery. Subsequent leads pointed them to the suspect, who was cooperative with police. Full Story
Federal study verify effectiveness of ‘high tunnels’
Washington state is one of 38 states that will participate in a pilot project, “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” — an initiative for farmers to use high tunnels, a.k.a. hoop houses, to increase the availability of locally grown produce. Full Story
Tribe seeks grant proposals on the effects of gambling
The Stillaguamish Tribe is accepting applications from public and non-profit agencies for projects that will address negative impacts on the north Snohomish County area from Stillaguamish Tribal gaming operations at Angel of the Wind Casino.
The funds will be awarded on a competitive basis to applicants with a demonstrated approach to addressing negative impact of gambling. Full Story
