EARLY HISTORY
Katherine McGinnis was born in Wisconsin May 6, 1863 and came to Seattle summer of 1889. Wed to Hugh P. McGinnis the fall of 1889, they came to Florence 1891. President George Washington died Dec. 14, 1799.
100 YEARS AGO (1909)
N. Carl Garrison was postmaster on Camano until Jan. 1. In 1907, he published “The Camano Enterprise” for a time.
90 YEARS AGO (1919)
George Hancock took the examination for mail carrier for the Camano Island route. And by the way, he married Olga Brandt the same day.
80 YEARS AGO (1929)
Margaret (Spiers) was born Dec. 11, 1905 in Ireland and came to New York in 1925 where she met and married Thomas Spiers in 1929. The C. J. Gunderson building was recently completed in East Stanwood. Bill Rouse bought the C.W. Brokaw property where Bonser’s art shop was located, as well as the office building, and they will be combined for bigger quarters for the System Fuel and Transfer Co.
70 YEARS AGO (1939)
The grand opening of Erickson’s Electric in East Stanwood brought out between 200-300 people. Lincoln High potato judging team were champions for the whole state.
60 YEARS AGO (1949)
The Methodist ladies prepared elk and deer meat for the Twin City Sportsmen’s Club dinner held in the city hall. Twin City Cards were rated winners in the Class “B” league. It only costs $40.55 to go from Stanwood to Chicago by bus.
50 YEARS AGO (1959)
A social was planned at Victoria Hall in an effort to get the 80 some families in that area acquainted. The first Grand Jury ever impaneled in Snohomish County had two Stanwood residents serving on it. Only two deer were taken on Camano during the 1959 season. Don’s Mobile Service opened under Geers management at Broadway/Oliver. Roadways in town needed repair following run-off that gouged out road shoulders.
40 YEARS AGO (1969)
Fred Reuble of Camano received an unusual Christmas present a few years ago from his wife: two Belgian horses, and he was driving them around recently. Five of the Stanwood Spartans placed on the Cascade League All-Star team.
30 YEARS AGO (1979)
Red tide warnings on Camano were lifted and all clams were safe for eating. Elger Bay Store had a grand opening, celebraiting moving into a new 3,000 square foot store. Sunday’s gale winds knocked down a few trees and some old barns.
20 YEARS AGO (1989)
Heichel’s Corner (the north side of intersection Old 99/SR 532 at I-5 Exit 212) was to remain mostly rural says the county. Residents along 99th and 95th met with county public works officials to make sure someone comes to their rescue the next time it floods, like it did last week.
10 YEARS AGO (1999)
There was a $750 reward for information on the person who shot and killed a valuable horse on Camano Island. Pat Ringland of Stanwood won the Football Hall of Fame scholarship. Rumors of bringing the crumpled King Dome remains to Stanwood for fill at the former gravel pit in East Stanwood are bogus. Creative cell tower designs may be in Camano’s future.
