QUENTIN MITCHELL
NOV. 16, 1945 – NOV. 25, 2009
Quentin Mitchell, fondly known as “Q” or “Kim” by his loved ones, passed away Nov. 25, 2009. He was 64.
Quentin was born Nov. 16, 1945 in Palo Alto, Calif., to Quentin and Eugenie Milburn Mitchell. Soon after, he moved with his family to Denver, Colo., where he attended Denver Country Day School. He then went to Claremont College, where he received a B.A. in economics, and then the University of Colorado in Denver, where he earned his master’s in regional and urban planning.
In the Navy, he achieved the rank of supply officer serving on Vieques Island, Puerto Rico and the Dugway Proving Ground, Utah and was honorably discharged.
Lured by the beauty of Washington, he moved to Olympia in the mid-1970s. Here, he met the love of his life, Vivian Henderson, on the steps of the mayor’s house. Three months later, they were married.
Quentin worked as a planner for Eagle County, Colo., and the Washington State Office of Community Development.
A life-long Democrat, he worked tirelessly for sensible land use and campaigned for numerous democratic causes across the state.
He also had a keen interest in Arabian horses, which he raised for a number of years. His favorite activity was manicuring the lawn to show off his wife’s wonderful gardens. His elegance, wry wit, well-considered comments at public meetings, and numerous letters to the editor will be sorely missed.
He passed away from prostate cancer, and is survived by a loving family, including his wife and three sisters, Anne, his twin Molly and Genie, numerous nieces and nephews, good friends and many cats.
In remembrance of Quentin, please contribute to the non-profit 7 Lakes Association, advocates for wise land stewardship in Snohomish County.
