Stanwood police bolstered by community during tough times

Commentary

Stop.

Let’s be honest: in the wake of several officer-involved shootings. . .

No. Let’s be more honest.

After Lake- have every wood, officers have every reason to be defensive and on edge.

“All sorts of boundaries were crossed,” said Ty Trenary, chief of police in Stanwood. “Coming to work last Monday was tough.”

Yet, in Stanwood at least, officers are handling it surprisingly well.

Trenary said he expected defensive posturing. He worried officers might unwittingly take out their frustrations with the situation in Lakewood on people in Stanwood. But they haven’t.

“I haven’t had to have a single one of those talks with officers,” he said.

Trenary, in part, credits the community.

Officers may have been shocked and angry, Trenary said, “but community outpouring made it tough to be angry for long.”

“We had a line out the door last Monday,” Trenary said, “and someone offers to buy our coffee almost every day.”

Still, he said, officers are taking extra precautions. They’re more alert, more watchful.

And that’s to be expected.

So thank you, officers, and thank you, Stanwood.
