Island County makes cuts nearly across the board
You can’t will money into existence, but they gave it a shot.
Island County commissioners cut funding to nearly every department by at least 4 percent in order to balance their preliminary 2010 budget last Tuesday.
The initial $367,000 in cuts came quickly.

Two geese dead, one injured

recently:
• Two domestic geese were shot and killed, and another wounded, at a home in the 2400 block of South Camano Drive. The owner, a 56-year-old man, and his wife discovered the geese while completing their chores on the morning of Nov. 12. Full Story

Marine committee seeks islander who loves Port Susan
Island County Marine Resources Committee (MRC) is looking for a Camano Island resident who wants to help shape the future of Port Susan by becoming an MRC member. Three-year appointments to the county advisory committee are made by the Island County Commissioners. Full Story
Temporary closure at Cavalero Park
Island County Public Works has been making plans to stabilize a hillside slope on Simonson Place which is the access road to the county’s Cavalero Park and boat launch ramp.
Public works will build a small 100-foot retaining wall along the hillside access to the park.
The project will take three weeks, starting on Nov. 30 and continuing until Dec. 18. Full Story
Skagit Valley Hospital and Skagit Valley Medical Center close to reaching agreement
Skagit Valley Hospital and Skagit Valley Medical Center leaders announced last week that the two organizations are close to finalizing a proposed definitive agreement based on the hospital acquiring the assets and employing the medical center’s 105 providers and 373 staff at six locations. Park naming contest ends in a draw
The naming contest for the new playground to be built next spring at Freedom Park has ended in a draw, according to project coordinator Greg Gilday.
“We received several dozen name submissions and after several weeks of voting, no clear winner emerged,” Gilday said.
Instead, the group found wide spread support for a majority of the names suggested. Full Story

In a continuing effort to monitor trumpeter swans that have succumbed to lead poisoning, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has re-established a hotline to report dead or ill swans in Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties. Full Story
