Deadline to get gifts to veterans

Wed., Nov. 25 is the deadline to get gifts to the American Legion auxiliary in Stanwood for veterans in the VA Hospital, Seattle, to give to their loved ones. They cannot get out to buy gifts for their families, but the public can donate gifts from which the veterans can choose. Drop unwrapped gifts off at the Stanwood American Legion Hall and include giftwrap and ribbon if possible. The auxiliary will see that items are delivered to the VA Hospital in time for veterans to select gifts and get them sent, if necessary, before Christmas. No glass items or anything breakable. Good gift items are clothing, sweaters, gloves, shirts, stockings, pen and pencil sets, soaps, stationary, slippers, scarves, billfolds, games for kids, stuffed animals, playing cards—in short, anything that you might give to your own family.

Gift cards going to Housing Hope

The Stanwood branch of Frontier Bank is participating in a holiday gift card drive sponsored by Housing Hope. Cards will be given to Housing Hope’s holiday program to make sure many families can participate in the holidays. Gift card ideas might include gas stations, grocery stores, drug stores, arts and crafts, office or school supply, restaurants (especially pizza), department stores, beauty shops, hardware stores, book stores or movie tickets. Donations of gift cards may be dropped off up until Dec. 20 at Frontier Bank, 8870 271 St. NW.

Fill a school bus for the food bank

Stanwood/Camano school bus drivers are collecting donations for the Stanwood Camano food bank, and hope to fill a bus with food. To donate, look for a bus parked at area merchants Sat., Dec. 5.

Make things out of duct tape Tuesday

“Duct tape wallets” is a Tues., Nov. 30 workshop at the Stanwood Library, 2:30 p.m. Duct tape: people say it holds the world together. Now you can use it to make a wallet. Join librarian Rob Branigin for this interactive workshop, tape will be provided. For more information, call the library, 629-3132.

Holiday tree for pet memories

Stanwood Community and Senior Center is doing a pet memory tree for the holidays. If you are interested in donating money in memory of, or in honor of, your pet (or someone else’s pet), contact Sandy or Lynn at the center, 629-7403, Mon.- Fri., 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Or you can go to the center’s Web site, stanwoodseniorcenter. org, for information and forms.

T-shirt artists take note

“Small Town – Big Fair” is the 2010 Stanwood-Camano Community Fair theme, and art work for the annual t-shirt is now being accepted. Fair dates are Aug. 6, 7 and 8. Winning design receives $200. Artwork must be clear, camera ready and in jpeg format. Send to P.O. Box 901, Stanwood, or call 629-4121. Deadline for artwork is Jan. 15. The S-C Fair is the largest community fair in the state, as opposed to county, say board members.

Annual December Christmas party

Fri., Dec. 11, 5:30 p.m., an annual Christmas party is being planned for members and residents of the surrounding community, at Stanwood United Methodist Church. Volunteers needed at resource center

Stanwood Camano Resource Center and Davis Place, an after school destination for teens, needs adult volunteers for a variety of positions. “We are seeking energetic, adult volunteers who enjoy working with teens, as well as working in the bookstore, special events and other activities,” said Janet Mott, volunteer coordinator. “We need those who can commit to two or four-hour shifts per week.” If you are interested, call 629-5257, or e-mail janet@ stanwoodcamanoresources.org.

Nov. 25 – 29, Hope Haven Photography is offering “Turkey Shots,” a 30-minute portrait session in your home, with 10 percent of the proceeds benefiting the Stanwood-Camano Food Bank.

Toastmaster’s club moves to new site

Stamano Toastmasters Club is moving to the Stanwood Chamber of Commerce, 8725 271st St NW, Wed., Dec. 2. Meeting times are every Wednesday, 7:15-8:30 a.m. All are welcome to visit. Bring kids to see Father Christmas

Bring the family to meet Father Christmas Sat., Nov. 28, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Christianson’s Nursery. The Jolly Old Elf will be strolling the grounds of Christianson’s Nursery and wandering through the greenhouses to meet and greet children of all ages and encourage one and all to share with him their Christmas wishes. Professional photographer Barb Roberson will be available to take pictures in a special winter setting complete with a one-horse open sleigh. Light refreshments.

Christmas Festival candle sale event

Town churches in ecumenical service

Stanwood United Methodist, along with other area churches, will join Camano Lutheran at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church for an ecumenical service Wed., Nov. 25, 7 p.m. Music of combined choirs will be included in the Evening Prayer, with Christine and Tom Sine of Mustard Seed Associates as homilists. Firefighters ask kids for help in design

North County Fire/EMS is asking children in its service territory from grades 1-5, to design a junior firefighter patch. Applications and contest rules are available online, northcountryfireems.com or at Freeborn Station (96) or Warm Beach Station (97). The Station’s afternoon party

The Station in downtown Stanwood, will host afternoon parties 2 - 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Admission at the door includes free popcorn, free pop, free pool, free ping-pong, free prizes. The Station is located at 8713 271 St. N.W.

Old time John Deere tractors from the Cascade 2 Cylinder Club are now on display at the Country Store in Stanwood. There is a one-half scale Waterboy 1917 (custom built), owned by Harold Eastbury. Also customized, 1944 L A and a 1946 L A, passed down for five generations in the family, are displayed by Gary Reinecke.

Bank drive to benefit food bank

Coastal Community Bank will be hosting a food drive to benefit the Stanwood Camano Food Bank. Both branches will be collecting non-perishable food such as canned food and flour from now through Dec. 23. The food bank is also in need of toiletry items, including soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo. Additionally, community members can drop check or cash donations at Coastal Community Bank, which will deliver the donations directly to the food bank. Branches are located in Stanwood at 9810 SR 532 next to Scandia Bakery, and on Camano at 818 N Sunrise inside the Windermere Real Estate office at Terry’s Corner. With the current economic situation, the food bank is seeing higher demands for their services.

‘Collect unwanted medicines’ program

The Snohomish County Partnership for Secure Medicine Disposal is launching a new pilot program for collecting unwanted medicines through law enforcement agencies Mon., Nov. 30, 1:30 p.m. at Edmonds Center for the Arts (410 4th Avenue North).

Doll collectors invited to auction

The Stanwood Community and Senior Center has collectible dolls that will be up for auction Sat., Dec. 5. For more information, contact the center, 629-7403, or stanwoodseniorcenter.org.
