Community Focus

COMPILED BY CAROL SCHMIDT

An appreciation goes out to the community for participation at the Silvana Hall’s recent harvest dinner and fundraiser. Over $6,800 was raised to contribute to the septic system project for Viking Hall. Nearly 300 people participated with great food, a live performance by country/rock singer Hannah Michelle Weeks, and some great raffle items. President Kevin Buhr noted “it was really neat to see just how many in the community contributed in preparation, attendance, and clean-up.” The Viking Hall has an ambitious list of upgrades and refurbishing projects planned; visit Web site, silvanavikinghall. com, to send them an e-mail if you would like more information on how to help.

SNO-ISLE LIBRARIES, of which Stanwood is a member, is one of the 17 libraries receiving money through the Washington State Library portion of a grant, “Tools for Tough Times.” In announcing the grant information, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation released more than $4 million in new funding that will help 10 community foundations, among them Washington State Library. Thirty notebook computers for libraries will be purchased, which will be dedicated for job seekers by providing online resources for skills building and job search. Job seekers often need more time for job searching, completing an application, developing a resume, or working to improve their computers skills. The notebook computers will be available at the Stanwood Library, as well as six other libraries throughout the area. “The recession has affected thousands of families in our state, and many need a hand as they work toward economic recovery and stability,” said William H. Gates Sr., co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “At the same time, many of Washington’s community support organizations are stretched thin by meeting a growing demand for services at a time when it’s difficult to raise funds. We are pleased to help our partners increase and enhance their invaluable work during these challenging times.” Since its inception, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has invested more than $3 billion in Washington state, including support for programs to reduce family homelessness; provide greater opportunities for students to start kindergarten ready to learn, graduate from high school, and earn a postsecondary (college) degree; ensure that libraries maintain quality access to technology; and help atrisk families, children, and communities.
