Stanwood United Methodist Church will be celebrating 125 years in Stanwood Sun., Nov. 22, with a praise service at 8:30 a.m. and more formal worship at 10:45 a.m., followed by a potluck dinner and other festivities. The ever-changing congregation has been sharing the “Good News” to generations of Stanwood and Camano families since it was established here in 1884.

Food for Huskies or Cougars?

Fri., Nov. 20, between the hours of 3 and 7 p.m., the Stanwood- Camano Kiwanis Club will hold a food drive at Haggens in Stanwood. This is Apple Cup weekend so there will be two boxes, one for the Huskies and one for the Cougars. “Please come out and vote for the team of your choice with a gift of non-perishable food for the food bank,” said a Kiwanis spokesman.

‘Art and Design II’ opens Saturday

Jack Gunter will be opening “Art and Design II” Sat., Nov. 21, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 10219 SR 532, in the old U-Haul site, across from Twin City Foods. He will be selling original art and antiques.

Christmas Festival candle sale event

Town churches in ecumenical service

Stanwood United Methodist, along with other area churches, will join Camano Lutheran at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church for an ecumenical service Wed., Nov. 25, 7 p.m. Music of combined choirs will be included in the Evening Prayer, with Christine and Tom Sine of Mustard Seed Associates as homilists. T he Station’s afternoon party

The Station in downtown Stanwood, will host an afternoon party 2 - 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Admission at the door includes free popcorn, free pop, free pool, free ping-pong, free prizes. The Station is located at 8713 271 St. N.W.

Red Cross shelter volunteer training

“This year there is the potential for significant flooding in the Green River Valley,” said the American Red Cross, and they are looking for volunteers to become trained now as a ReserveCorps shelter volunteer so they will be ready. ‘Collect unwanted medicines’ program

The Snohomish County Partnership for Secure Medicine Disposal is launching a new pilot program for collecting unwanted medicines through law enforcement agencies Mon., Nov. 30, 1:30 p.m. at Edmonds Center for the Arts (410 4th Avenue North). “Get the unwanted meds out of your homes, of your water, of the reach of a child,” say many of the agencies partnering with law enforcement in Snohomish County to securely dispose of your unwanted prescription medicines (collection to begin Dec. 1). Coordinating Partners: Snohomish Regional Drug Task Force, Snohomish Health District, and Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. Participating law enforcement agencies include Stanwood Police and the Washington State Patrol. Supporting Partners: Washington State Department of Ecology, Snohomish County Drug Action Task Force, Group Health Cooperative, Science and Management of Addictions (SAMA) Foundation and Bartell Drugs.

D oll collectors invited to auction

Visioning workshop for Kayak Park

There will be a visioning workshop for Kayak Point Regional Park Wed., Nov. 18, 6:30 p.m. in the Lake Goodwin Community Club, 17323 42 Ave. N.W., south of Stanwood. This workshop will be in place of the November meeting of the Marine Research Committee.

Zumba party is free to community

Seminar on ‘water that we drink’

Sat., Nov. 21, 1 p.m., there will be a Health and Wellness Seminar on “It’s all about the water we drink,” at Brindles Marketplace on Camano Island, 848 N. Sunrise Blvd. (Terry’s Corner). There are still spaces available for vendors wishing to display their wares with the other 70 already there. Get the jump on holiday decorating

“Deck the halls” program presented by Karin Kempers and Joanne Romann Sat., Nov. 21, 11 a.m. at Christianson’s Nursery, will inspire participants to get an early start on holiday decorating. With an emphasis on natural materials from gardens or woods, ideas for ornaments, wreaths, centerpieces, topiaries and potpourris can be found. Thanksgiving at the Gathering Place

The Stanwood Camano community is invited to Thanksgiving dinner at the Gathering Place Thurs., Nov. 26, 5:30 p.m. The dinner will be cooked by 10 local churches, and held at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 27201 99 Ave. N.W. in the west end of Stanwood, near Josephine. The church is on the Community Transit bus route for those needing transportation. The traditional turkey dinner will have all the trimmings: mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, gravy and vegetables, topped off by pie. If you plan to attend, call 629-5257 so the cooks can get a head count on how much to prepare.

Flood Control Dist. moves meeting site

The Stillaguamish Flood Control District will meet at the Stanwood Chamber of Commerce (next door to the police station) Thurs., Nov. 19, 7 p.m. The rate of assessment for the year 2010 will be the main topic of discussion.

Old time John Deere tractors on display

Old time John Deere tractors from the Cascade 2 Cylinder Club are in display at the Country Store in Stanwood. There is a onehalf scale Waterboy 1917 (custom built), owned by Harold Eastbury. Also customized, is a 1944 L A, and a 1946 LA, passed down for five generations in the family, will be displayed by Gary Reinecke.

Bank drive to benefit food bank

Coastal Community Bank will be hosting a food drive to benefit the Stanwood Camano Food Bank. Both branches will be collecting non-perishable food such as canned food and flour through Dec. 23. The food bank is also in need of toiletry items, including soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant and shampoo. Additionally, community members can drop check or cash donations at Coastal Community Bank, which will deliver the donations directly to the food bank. Branches are located in Stanwood at 9810 SR 532 next to Scandia Bakery, and on Camano at 818 N Sunrise inside the Windermere Real Estate office at Terry’s Corner. With the current economic situation, the food bank is seeing higher demands for their services. Year to date through October, the local food bank has served 3,730 families and close to 13,000 individuals.

Winter coat collection for less fortunate

Z’s, All Things Good, 9504 271 St. in Stanwood, is collecting coats, adult new and used, both men and women’s for this winter. Please drop off anything you have during 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday - Friday. For details, call 629-5040.
