Uncle Gus was a mischievous tease. Uncle Gus liked to sing. And Uncle August Schafer was on Gen. George Patton’s staff in World War 2, serving in the German theater of command.
I didn’t find this out until after he’d passed away a few years ago. It came to light that he had kept meticulous scrapbooks throughout his lifetime military career. Full Story
Local woman awarded for work with soldiers
Stanwood resident Trisha Pearce received the 2009 Outstanding Female Nonveteran of the Year Award.
The Washington Department of Veteran Affairs presented the award to Pearce Saturday.
The award recognized Pearce’s founding and directing of Soldiers Project Northwest, which connects military personnel and their families with counselors. Full Story

Rasmus Larsen was seven when he came to the U.S. with his parents, Karen and Lars Larsen, and traveled from New York to Stanwood by train; he later married Stella Redpath. He was a farmer and a powder monkey for road building, then later he and Stella both worked for Twin City Foods, Inc.
