To fix the dent or not
The first thing that comes to mind after a minor scrape or fender bender is likely, “How much will it cost to fix?”
While auto insurance will probably pay the repair, after the deductible, many car owners may choose not to make the repair and face higher premiums, so they live with it.
That’s not always a good idea, however.
The ding or scraped paint can cause rust that will get worse over time. Minor defects will reduce the trade-in value of the car, or become a bigger expense later on, especially on leased vehicles when they are returned.
Statistics show that half of all vehicles with 15,000 or more miles suffer nuisance scratches or other cosmetic damage.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, most car bumpers do little to resist damage in even low-speed collisions. Modern-day bumpers may improve aerodynamics, fuel economy and appearance, but they get easily scratched, dented or scuffed.
No need to worry.
With 35,000 auto body repair shops nationwide, it’s easy enough to find someone to do the repairs. But how to choose? The best choice is often a shop recommended by family or friends.
