Up and down final week nets soccer girls district berth

By JOHN GALBREATH Sports Editor
In what had to be an alternately dismaying and exhilarating week of soccer, the local Lady Spartan booters (6-7-2, 20 points) eventually emerged with a berth in this week’s Northwest 4A District Tournament after a pair of WesCo 4A North losses and a 2-0 blanking of Shorewood on Saturday.

That final victory over the Thunderbirds was a play-in victory over the south’s No. 4 team that moved the Sparts into a first-round match with Snohomish that was played last night, Mon., Nov. 2, on the Panther pitch. Results were not available by press time.

In the first showdown of the week, the Spartans trailed Lake Stevens early, 2-0. In the 31st minute, however, senior co-captain Riley Henderson passed the ball to Kalina Eveland who, in turn, crossed the ball to an ever-vigilant Keanae Loera, who then found the ball a home in the back of the enemy net.

Despite a valiant effort by Stanwood keeper Haley Haugstad, who had repelled two straight Viking shotson goal 30 seconds earlier, the visitors tallied with just a minute remaining in the first half of play to make it 3-1.S

coring 31 minutes apart in the second half, Reanne Lee (Henderson assist) and Loera (penalty kick), knotted the match 3-3. Two overtime sudden death periods failed to untie the score, so the newly invoked penalty kick rule was to be the determiner of the match.

Spartans Hailey Storbeck, Riley Henderson, Keanae Loera and Kalina Eveland all outwitted the Viking keeper, but Lake Stevens’ kickers scored on each of their five attempts and came away with a 4-3 overtime victory.

Arlington scored a 2-1 win the next night as the regular WesCo 4A North season came to a halt. Keanae Loera tallied in the 73rd minute for Stanwood in the loss.

Although names of the goal-makers in the 2-0 shutout, play-in match against Shorewood’s Thunderbirds were unavailable, the Spartans moved on to yesterday’s match with archrival Snohomish as one of Northwest District 1’s eight teams. Haley Haugstad was in-goal for Stanwood.
