Henry Lane won favor at Island County Conservation Futures Citizens’ Advisory Board’s public meeting on Thursday.
The meeting gathered input regarding the use of conservation funds in the amount of $586,789 for developing beachfront property off Henry Lane, Camano Island.
The 3.18-acre parcel is part of the Hieb property the county purchased Dec. 24, 2008.
Betty Kemp, Island County general services administration director, said “the property was purchased with the intent of an application being filed to fund its development.”
The parcel in question qualifies for conservation funds, and has already been approved by the Technical Advisory Board. The next step was the public hearing.
The board was presented with the application for conservation funds and had a chance to gather public response.
After deliberation, “the Citizens’ Advisory Board is recommending the award of Conservation Futures Funds to the Henry Lane project,” said Larry Kwarsick, the board’s chair.
The vote was split, four in favor and one opposed. Although the approval can’t be considered conclusive until a majority of the nine members vote in favor, it does constitute a recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners.
Island County hopes to receive grant money from state Legislature to supplement conservation funds.
