By outplaying Monroe and Lake Stevens with identical 5-2 scores last week, the Spartan boys’ tennis team (10-5) moved into third place in the WesCo North behind Everett (15-0) and Arlington (11-4).
Actually, because the undefeated Seagulls are a 3A team, the Sparts are in second place among 4A schools, just a match ahead of Snohomish (9-5).
Against the Bearcats, all three doubles tandems proved victorious as did two of the singles competitors.
Chris Gilmore and Teague Nelson teamed up to blank Monroe’s No. 1 doubles team 6-0, 6-0.
In No. 2 doubles, Zach Meyer and Frank Medlicott won 6-1, 6-4 and Joel Shroyer and his partner Joey Zingarelli outhit their adversaries 6-2, 6-2.
Singles wins went to Sean Dolan (No. 3) 6-0, 6-0 and Jonathan Wolf (No. 4) 6-3, 6-2. In the match with Lake Stevens, Gilmore (6-0, 6-0), Jacob Hamiter (6-1, 6-0) and Nathan Beykovsky (6-1, 6-4) were triumphant in singles play while the Spartan duos James McCune/Meyer (6-2, 6-3) and Dolan/Shroyer (6-0, 6-3) grabbed doubles victories.
The Northern Division singles/doubles competition begins tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 21, and continues through Friday, Oct. 23 on the Stanwood High courts beginning at 1 p.m.
