Aquanauts submerge Glacier, Snohomish

By JOHN GALBREATH Sports Editor

Winning two of the three relays, a pair of freestyle victories from Alisa Stang and strong swims from Whitney Weinert and Zanetta Uy in the breaststroke and 500 free, respectively, set the tone for the Lady Spartan swim team’s victory over Glacier Peak (90-80) and Snohomish (119-51) last Thursday afternoon.

But there was more to it than that.

Depth, developed over the last few years under the coaches Rita Brennan and Art Wiper, is beginning to pay off for the Sparts.

By having an ever-increasing number of athletes join the ranks in that span, the local swim program has taken off by leaps and bounds and, as a result, is becoming competitive with the best swim teams the area has to offer – like Snohomish’s Glacier Peak High.

All of that has come about because of the seconds, thirds and fourths the local aquanauts have been able to accumulate in meet after meet this season.

Christina Garrett, Weinert, Stang and Uy won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:59 in the first race of the day and then followed that up with a 1:49 winning time in the 200 freestyle relay (with Kenzie Bell replacing Garrett) midway through the WesCo meet.

Stang’s two individual triumphs were in the 200 free (2:03) and the 100 free (57.9).

Weinert, a junior, outtouched all 100 backstroke participants by swimming a time of 1:05.

Just a freshman, Zanetta Uy easily completed the twenty-lap 500 free in five minutes, 49 seconds, a full 15 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.

Using times and placings swum against Snohomish, the following swims, besides those mentioned above, were recorded:

• 200 medley relay: 3rd: Maddie Divelbiss, Maia Jenkins, Hannah Iverson, Samantha France (2:17).

• 200 free: 2nd: Bell (2:17); 3rd: Kindra Copper (2:23).
