A free concert featuring the Ugandan Orphan’s Choir will be at the Camano Lutheran Church 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. The Ugandan Orphans Choir brings a message of hope to American audiences through the traditional rhythmic dances and songs of Africa. Performances include colorful African costumes and traditional instruments such as drums and pan pipes as the children sing and dance tribal songs from all over Africa. The concerts are free, but the purpose of the tour is to gather sponsors. Sponsorship information is available at the concert, or online at childcareworldwide.org. Thurs., Oct. 29, there will be a 6:30 p.m. community meeting at the Homola residence, 1931 Garrison Rd. on Camano Island, to discuss a proposal by AT&T Mobility to construct an unstaffed telecommunications facility. It will consist of a three (3) sector antenna array with three (3) antennas per sector mounted on proposed 150-foot monopole. Equipment cabinets will be located on a concrete slab at the base of the monopole within a 50x50 foot lease area.

Arrowhead Road project open house

The public is invited to attend a project open house for the Arrowhead Road Improvement Project Wed., Oct. 28, Camano Senior and Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Rd. Drop by any time between 3 and 6 p.m. to look at the conceptual drawings, ask questions, discuss the project with the county design team, and p rovide feedback on alternatives.

Fire/Rescue seeking unwanted vehicles

Camano Island Fire and Rescue needs unwanted vehicles with which to practice getting trapped victims out. CIFR responded to over 80 motor vehicle accidents in 2009, and many of these required use of extrication tools, commonly known as the “jaws of life.” In order to maintain a high level of proficiency and to learn new extrication techniques, the district is seeking donated vehicles that must have a clean, clear title and can be picked up in the Stanwood Camano area free of charge. Harvest Fun Fair at Camano Chapel

Wed., Oct. 28, there will be a harvest fun fair at Camano Chapel, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Admission: one bag of candy and 2 cans of nonperishable food. Fun for the whole family, kids must be accompanied by an adult. No scary, gory, bloody or revealing costumes please! No weapons allowed even if part of the costume. Bouncy House, cake walk, Cubbie Bear, karaoke, corn maze, drawings and other games. For more information call the chapel, 387-7202. Camano Chapel is located at 867 S. West Camano Dr.

Island Women’s Republican Club meets

The Camano Island Women’s Republican Club (CIWRC) will meet at 12 noon Tues., Oct. 27 at the Lost Lake Community Center, 1469 West Lake Dr. on Camano Island. Lunch will be served at noon prior to the meeting. Members are asked to bring items for the food bank. The CIWRC welcomes new members and visitors from the Camano/Stanwood area.

CARE plants trees for the environment

Camano Action for a Rural Environment will be planting 350 trees on Camano Island Oct. 24 in observance of International Day of Climate Action, and the public is invited to join CARE members. O ctober Harvest Fest at Cama Beach

Oct. 24 1-5 p.m., the community is invited to participate in nature activities at Cama Beach with families. Washington State Parks and The Center for Wooden Boats have this family fun planned, including walks along forest trails in search of clues on the forest animal’s discovery. Other activities include mini -pumpkin decorating, making an animal mask, nature design T-shirt painting, crafts for kids and much more. See live small beach critters in an aquarium, at 1880 S. W. Citizen’s Advisory Board sets meeting

Island County Conservation Futures Citizens’ Advisory Board will hold a 6 p.m. public meeting Thurs., Oct. 29, at Island County Camano Multipurpose Bldg., 141 N East Camano Dr. Purpose of this meeting is to gain public input concerning an application for Conservation Futures Funds. This application proposes purchasing 3.18 acres of land located off of Henry Lane on Camano. Information on this application may be obtained by contacting Island County General Services Administration, 360-679-7378, located at 1 NE 7th Street Coupeville, during normal business hours.

‘Making $ense from $olar’ program

Wed., Oct. 28, 7 p.m., Suzanne Frew, manager of residental programs at the Snohomish PUD, will provide information on how the PUD “Solar Express” program will bring solar energy to homes and how, with financial incentives and 30 percent federal tax credit, you can create your own clean, green, renewable energy. The event will be at the Camano Multipurpose Center (blue bldg), 141 N. East Camano Dr. This is part of the Fourth Wednesday Informational Series, sponsored by the WSU Island County Beach Watchers. Selah service offered on All Saints Day

An All Saints Selah Service will be offered on All Saints Day, Sun., Nov.1, 7 p.m. at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church. This will be a contemplative service of music, scripture and silent prayer, led by Jeff Johnson, with Billie and Steve Jensen. Childcare provided. For more information, call the church, 629-3969.

Chili cooks, get fired up for annual event

For the ninth year, the annual chowder and chili cookoff will be held at the Camano Senior and Community Center, Nov. 8, 3 to 7 p.m., but it will be the 14th such event. Last year, over 1,500 people attended, and this year, there will be a band providing music. A special live art auction will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., where wine will be served. Halloween open house at Madrona station

The Madrona Fire Sirens invite families and their children to come to the Halloween open house at the Madrona Fire Station, 916 W. Fifth St. at Tarragon, Sat., Oct. 31, 4-9 p.m. Haunted tunnel for children with candy, cookies and a door prize.

Free soil building workshop Monday

The public is invited to the WSU Extension and the Northwest Ag Business Center at Greenbank Farm Mon., Oct. 26, 10 a.m.- 2:30 p.m., to learn about adding composted manures to fields. Information will not be restricted to those working within organic standards, but will focus on more sustainable farming practices. Camano Water Ass’n hosts state

Camano Water Systems Association will host State Health Committee members of Group-B Water Systems Wed., Oct. 21 at Lost Lake Community Center, starting at 7 p.m. preceded by a 6:30 coffee hour.

AARP safe driving class Friday

The next AARP safe driving class is Fri., Oct. 23, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Camano Community and Senior Center. This is an eighthour course, sponsored by AARP, and those interested are to register at the center.
