Support Ref. 71, the fair and decent thing to do

Dear Editor:

I’m writing to encourage all your readers to learn about and approve Referendum 71.

Referendum 71 protects the basic rights of gay and lesbian families.

At this time of so much uncertainty and worry in the world, it is our duty to make sure all families in Washington are protected. Despite the scare tactics being used, this referendum does not change marriage law nor does it affect school curriculum.

I am an ardent supporter of gay marriage and would like to see that basic right extended to all, but that’s a different issue.

Ref. 71 is not such a controversial motion. It protects the right of our neighbors and our friends to visit loved ones in the hospital, to have insurance coverage, to protect their children’s futures, and to be sure their families will be cared for should something happen to them.

These are human rights, and affect no one but the families concerned.

Please join me in voting yes on Referendum 71. If you don’t know the facts, I encourage you to do some research. You’ll find that approving this referendum is the fair and decent thing to do.
