Stanwood Library welcomes new librarian
By KRISTI PIHL Staff Reporter
Jill Campbell recently began as the managing librarian at Stanwood Library.
Jill Campbell still remembers the first book she received as a gift from the non-profit Reading is Fundamental literacy organization.
The book was “Maggie Adams, Dancer,” by Karen Strickler Dean. The cover was lavender with a picture of a ballerina.
Campbell was recently hired as the new managing librarian at Stanwood Library.
“I have always just hung around libraries ever since I was a kid,” she said.
She didn’t become a librarian right away. Instead, Campbell said she worked for a large company, before she decided to go back to school to earn a master’s degree in business administration.
Her first class was a library research course, and she decided librarian . and not business professor . was the way she wanted to go.
Campbell received her master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee in 2002. She began as a reference and technical services librarian for the Puyallup Public Library.
She then became a selection librarian at Sno-Isle Libraries’ Marysville Service Center. She said she enjoyed the position, where she was responsible for the adult nonfiction and international language collections in the library system. In addition to ordering new materials, she maintained the current collection.
But Campbell said she missed interacting with the public.
As the new managing librarian, Campbell said she is excited about the changes that will occur with the implementation of Sno-Isle Libraries’ strategic planning process. Some of the changes include increasing user satisfaction with the system’s collection, aligning services at the library more closely to community needs and offering more programs for all ages.
Public libraries are important because of the access to materials that they give to everyone in the community, she said.
Overall, Campbell said she hopes people will feel welcomed at the Stanwood Library. The library is there to provide services to local residents.
She said she already feels welcomed.
