City likely to cut, reduce 5 positions
The Stanwood City Council sat down last week to begin work on a tough 2010 budget.
Each department head was asked to budget for the current level of service with fewer dollars, said Joyce Papke, city administrator.
Even with a bare bones budget proposed by department heads, the city was still $600,000 in the hole, or about 10 percent of the general fund, Papke said. Full Story
Structure fire causes $100,000 damage
A structure fire on north Camano Island caused about $100,000 in damage.
The homeowner reported the fire Thursday night, and Camano Island Fire and Rescue crews stationed at the Terry’s Corner Fire Station quickly responded, said Levon Yengoyan, Camano Island Fire and Rescue assistant chief. Full Story
Routine water flush
The Public Works department performed a routine flush of the city’s water system last Wednesday evening after a complaint was received regarding water quality earlier in the day. Full Story
Shortfall $2.5 million, not $4.8 million
In the Oct. 13 issue, “Voters to determine Sno- Isle’s services” should have read: Both budgets include some level of cuts. The difference between the two is that if the levy fails, the library system will have to cut about $2.5 million more. Full Story

• After rear-ending a vehicle in the 9200 block of SR 532 on Oct. 8, the driver said the sun was in his eyes.
• On Oct. 13, a two-car collision occurred in the 88th Ave/SR 532 area when a driver rear-ended the vehicle in front of her while looking at her radio. Full Story

SR 532 turn lanes nearing completion
WSDOT SR 532 project’s numerous turn lanes and the truck climbing lanes at three locations are nearing completion.
Crews will be putting on the finishing touches this week between 12th Avenue NW and 28th Avenue NW, when crews will alternate single lane traffic on SR 532 from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. for striping and guardrail work. Full Story

Sno-Isle raises $19,000 in “Stay Home & Read” fundraiser
There were no bids, no reservations, no babysitters to hire, no elegant dresses to wear. Instead, this year the Sno-Isle Libraries Foundation, in partnership with corporate sponsors, raised money by doing nothing for its annual fundraising event. And donors liked it.
More than $19,000 was raised through the “Stay Home and Read a Book” fundraiser. Full Story
Fewer ballot drop-off locations for Nov. 3 general election
The number of ballot collection centers has been reduced to five staffed locations and one 24-hour ballot drop box. These are ballot drop off locations, not, polling precincts.
Snohomish County adopted a mail-in ballot system last year.
The five collection centers are located at five Sno-Isle libraries — in Marysville, Snohomish, Lynnwood, Mill Creek and Mukilteo. Full Story
Stanwood Library welcomes new librarian
Jill Campbell still remembers the first book she received as a gift from the non-profit Reading is Fundamental literacy organization.
The book was “Maggie Adams, Dancer,” by Karen Strickler Dean. The cover was lavender with a picture of a ballerina.
Campbell was recently hired as the new managing librarian at Stanwood Library. Full Story
