Deputy with “sharp wit” retires from Island County
Chris Ellis, Island County Sheriff’s Office chief criminal deputy, has been looking forward to retirement.
He plans to do whatever he wants, including riding his Harley and traveling with his wife, Patty.
Ellis started with the sheriff’s office in 1987, and has held almost every rank except sheriff. Full Story
Two aim for fire commissioner seat
Gary Bradley and Don Timmerman would both like to spend the next six years as one of Camano Island’s fire commissioners for District 1.
Bradley, 50, the incumbent, is finishing his second term, and said his experience in the fire district will help him serve island residents. Timmerman, 66, said he feels a fresh set of eyes on the commission would benefit the public. Full Story

Property taxes due Oct. 31
Island County Treasurer Linda E. Riffe has sent out a reminder that “second half” property taxes are due Oct. 31. Because Oct. 31 falls on a Saturday, the statute allows the payments to be received the “next business day,” i.e. Monday, Nov. 2.
If mailing, envelopes must carry the due date postmark. Full Story

Winter walks explore Camano’s beauty
Friends and neighbors can spend a pleasant couple of hours one Saturday a month walking with Friends of Camano Island Parks (FOCIP).
A monthly series of moderately paced, guided walks on Camano Island trails begins the first Saturday of November and continues through May.
Walks start at 9:50 a.m. and are completed by noon. Full Story
