WSU workshop: Insects of Skagit County

WSU Skagit County Extension Master Gardeners in partnership with WSU - Mount Vernon NWREC are presenting another Know & Grow workshop, "Insects of Skagit County," 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13 at WSU Mount Vernon NWREC, 16650 State Route 536 (Memorial Highway).

A retired entomologist who taught and worked in the field for 40 years, Dr. Lloyd Eighme, will speak on his new book, "Insects of Skagit County". This 150-page spiral bound book is chock full of interesting facts and color photos of the more common insects found in Skagit County. The project evolved from his many hours of assistance and teaching with the WSU Skagit County Extension Master Gardener program since 1994.

"It is my hope that this beginning will inspire and encourage curious people to search and to learn more about the fascinating insects in our own backyards," he says. Dr. Eighme will be available for book signing. Experts will be there to answer your insect questions and problems. The Master Gardener insect collection of specimens found in Skagit County will be on hand for viewing.

"Insects of Skagit County" can be purchased for $25 and Master Gardener-grown plants will be for sale before and after the workshop.

All proceeds from book and plant sales help support the WSU Skagit County Extension Master Gardener program.

A series of Tuesday afternoon workshops, WSU Know & Grow is for the home gardener and combines the latest in horticultural research with sound gardening advice presented by the Washington State University Skagit County Extension Master Gardeners in partnership with the WSU - Mount Vernon Northwestern Washington Research & Extension Center.

Choosing the right trees

Linda Chalker-Scott, Ph.D. will discuss planting of trees and shrubs to avoid cultural, disease and insect problems, with a bit of mythbusting for good measure at a workshop scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15 in Mount Vernon.

Sustainability, or "going green," will be woven throughout the program, which is being presented by Washington State University's Skagit County Extension Master Gardeners.

Cost is $20 per person, and a box lunch may be purchased for an additional charge. Detailed information available online at skagit.wsu.edu or call 360- 428-4270.
