"Stanwood's Kenzie Bell outswam all other competitors while winning the 200- yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly events against Lynnwood" (as quoted in the Stanwood/Camano News two weeks ago). The caption under the picture of the athlete could have just as easily read, "Kenzie was in her glory as she swam, beating out all other competitors. Full Story

EARLY HISTORY Classes opened in the brand new Stanwood School in 1872, the third built in Snohomish County, two miles north of town. 100 YEARS AGO (1909) Dora Thorsen, born in Florence, graduated from high school here, and then Bellingham Normal College (now WWU) and returned to teach at Woodland School (in the vicinity of today's fairgrounds). The prize winners for the Harvest Jubilee Art Show "Farms, Fields and Foliage" juried show Sept. 19 and 20 are: • Jack Dorsey's "Farm Heritage" won the $300 Best Representation of the Theme, which was sponsored by Angels of the Winds Casino. Full Story
Blessings
Dogs of all shapes and sizes (and degrees of decorum) and kitties in arms and in carriers attended church with their humans Sun., Oct. 4, at St. Aidan's Episcopal Church, Camano, in commemoration of St. Francis' Day. A double procession followed festive banners and each animal received a special blessing at the altar and a St. Francis medal to call their own. Full Story

Wedding date set
Patrick Evan Bell of Camano Island and Resa Renee Lee of Chehalis are excited to announce their engagement, with the wedding planned for Dec. 5 at the Aerie Ballroom in Centralia. New officers and board of directors of the Stanwood-Camano Island Kiwanis club were installed Sept. 30 by Lt. Governor Dave Minch of Lake Stevens. Library makeover
Marysville Target human resources manager, Mita Burns, pictured fourth from left, brought her team of 10 employees and volunteers to improve and update the Arlington Christian School library Sept. 5 and 12. They worked in their red Target T-shirts, sorting books, labeling shelves, and cleaning and rearranging the library. As a part of their community service, the team also provided gift cards, school supplies, and other material to be distributed to the students. Arlington Christian School is a non-denominational country school founded in 1975 in the rapidly growing Smokey Point area between Stanwood and Arlington. The campus, a former dairy farm situated on 22 acres, serves grades kindergarten through 12th grade. For information call 360-652-2988. Full Story
FFA nationals
Alyssa Thompson of the Stanwood FFA Chapter, has been selected to play in the National FFA Band at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis Oct. 21-24. She submitted an audition tape of her playing the French horn, and was one of 92 FFA members selected to perform several times at the convention. The audience in Conseco Fieldhouse is expected to be more than 54,000. Full Story

Lifetime achievement
Former Stanwood-Camano NEWS publisher Dave Pinkham was awarded the Miles Turnbull Master Editor/Publisher Award at the 122nd Washington Newspapers Association Awards (WNPA) convention on Oct. 2. The award, established in 1993, honors an active editor or publisher who has worked hard and unselfishly to make a significant contribution to his/her newspaper, community and state, as well as the WNPA.
