Statewide candidates will appear first at the all-candidate forum for north Snohomish County and Camano Island, which starts 6:30 p.m. Wed., Oct. 21 in the Stanwood Middle School cafeteria, 9405 271 St. The format for the forum will follow the standard League of Women Voters format. Each category of candidates will be presented together. Each candidate will have three minutes for a presentation. Questions will follow and each candidate will have one minute to answer with one minute to rebut.

'Respect Life Fair' next weekend

Marie Stebing, youth group minister at St. Cecilia Church is chair of this year's "Respect Life Fair" set for Oct. 24 and 25. Father Peter West, associate director of Priests For Life, will speak at the 5 p.m. Saturday Mass, with dinner to follow in the coffee room. He will also speak at the 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday Mass, with the fair and lunch afterwards, also in the coffee room. Pro-life displays feature the theme "Hooked on Life."

Concert celebrates new exhibit

Richard Rorex, a new transplant to the area, will present a guitar concert at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center in Stanwood Sun., Oct. 18, 2 p.m. The event celebrates opening of a new exhibit by the Stanwood Area Historical Society, "Berries, Farms, Dairies." There is no charge but donations will be accepted at the door to help support the society's programs. Refreshments will be served. A graduate of Cornish College of the Arts with a BA and a master's degree, Rorex will play baroque, romantic, jazz and contemporary works.

Vendor spaces at 'green' exhibition

The public is invited to the first Stanwood area "Green Up Your Room" luncheon and exhibition Sat., Oct. 31, and vendor spaces are available by inquiring at the First National Professional Center, 10101 270th St. N.W. (former First National Bank of Stanwood building in west Stanwood). Special guest speaker from Germany, Michael Hofmann, will talk about 100 percent green building materials and how they benefit today's green awareness. Event hours are noon to 4 p.m., call 629-0475 for more information.

Crafters needed for November bazaar

A craft bazaar will be held the weekend of Nov. 6 and 7, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Stanwood Community and Senior Center, 7430 276 St. NW, phone is 629-7403. Applications are now available. Also, "Zumba Gold," classes Monday-Thursdays, 4 p.m. at the center.

Flood Control District meeting

The public is invited to the Stillaguamish Flood Control District meeting in the Stanwood PUD conference room at 7 p.m., Thurs., Oct. 15.

NAMI-Northsound support group

NAMI-Northsound, a support group for family and friends of the mentally ill, will meet Mon., Oct. 19, 6:30 p.m. in Stanwood United Methodist Church. For more information, call 387-2519, 387-5705, 387-6769, or 629-2282.

Public invited to dine at 'Eats Café'

The Assist Program at Stanwood High School is having its first Eats Cafe breakfast Tues., Oct. 27, 8-10:30 a.m. in room 62 at the Church Creek Campus. "We hope you are able to come enjoy breakfast and see our students in action!" said a spokesperson. There will also be an autumn boutique with student-made items.

Mark calendars for popular bazaar

The Ladies Aid of Freeborn Lutheran Church presents their free prayer squares to send soldiers, loved ones in hospitals, nursing homes, or for anyone who is ill, hurting, grieving along with other handcrafted items, gift baskets, garden produce, hats, scarves, aprons, and a fudge mix that you bake yourself and the raffle of a a queen-sized quilt. Proceeds will benefit the food bank, charity organizations, and Lutheran World Relief. A spokesperson said that they will be receiving matching funds from Thrivent For Lutherans to support these charity works. The church is located just off the freeway at exit 215, turn right and up the hill to 2304 300th.

Lil' Cheer clinic for youngsters

Stanwood High 4A Booster Club Lil' Cheer Clinic for grades K-5 is Fri., Oct. 16, 4 to 8 p.m. There is a cost per child with discounts for two or more from same family. Includes Lil' Cheer T-shirt, pom-poms, picture with cheerleaders, dinner and snack. Registration forms are available at all Stanwood/Camano elementary schools and at the Stanwood Chamber of Commerce office on 271st. Chorale schedules Sunday rehearsals

The Stanwood-Camano Chorale will be rehearsing each Sunday, 3 to 5 p.m., at Stanwood United Methodist Church. There is a tuition for the fall/Christmas season. All singers are welcome and no audition is required. For more information call 360-445-2721.

'Puss 'n Boots' presentation Saturday

The Stanwood Library presents "Puss 'n Boots," by Last Leaf Productions, Sat., Oct. 17, 11 a.m. in the library meeting room. Especially for school-age children, this fairy tale about a tricky cat who puts on boots and turns his owner into a prince will be brought to life by actors and actresses from the company. B ook group meets at Merrill Gardens

The Stanwood Library Book Group will meet Wed., Oct.14, 6 p.m,. at the Merrill Gardens library, to discuss the 2009 Stanwood Camano "Together We Read" selection, "Plenty: Eating Locally on the 100 Mile Diet," by Alisa Smith and J.B. Knitter's Guild welcomes all knitters

The North Sound Knitter's Guild meets Tues., Oct 13 at St. Aidan's church, 6 to 9 p.m. All knitters are welcome, whether you learned yesterday or have knitted for 40 years. St. Aidan's is located on Route 532 across from the Second Chance Thrift store on Camano Island. The program will be "Blocking Your Knits." For further information, call June Dickinson, 387-1952. The Guild meets the second Tuesday of each month.

Women's health luncheon Thursday Jennifer James will speak at a women's health luncheon 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Thurs., Oct. 15 at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon. The talk, "How we change and adapt at any age," is sponsored by the Skagit Regional Heart & Vascular Institute. An urban cultural anthropologist who was a full-time faculty member of the psychiatry and behavioral sciences department at the University of Washington for 12 years, James will outline the sources and direction of technological, economic and cultural change. Registration opens Oct. 15 for the Everett Mountaineers banquet at Smokey Point's Medallion Hotel Nov. 14. Renowned mountaineer and high altitude cinematographer Peter Athans will be guest speaker, with his presentation documenting the beauty of Everest in still photography and video. Youth Symphony schedules concert

Fidalgo Youth Symphony's fall concert is Fri., Oct. 30, 7 p.m. in McIntyre Hall, 2501 East College Way, Mount Vernon. The Festival Symphony will perform a medley from West Side Story. Youth Symphony will perform the William Tell Overture (used as the theme for the old "Lone Ranger" TV shows and in "Bambi meets Godzilla."
