Mayor advises precautions with H1N1
H1N1 is already in the community, while the vaccine is just beginning to arrive. The influenza strain hasn't behaved like a typical one, said Dianne White, Stanwood mayor and local pharmacist, at a town hall meeting Tuesday. It is unusual for a flu strain to be present during the summer, as H1N1 was, she said. Full Story
Voters to determine Sno-Isle's services
Sno-Isle Libraries has two possible 2010 budgets. If the levy lid lift of 9 cents, from 31 cents to 40 cents per $1,000 of assessed value, passes in the Nov. 3 general election, one will be used. The other is for if the measure fails. Full Story
Help needed for earthquake victims
I am writing to solicit the help of the citizens of Stanwood and Camano Island in supporting the relief effort in Padang, on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, and the surrounding area. On Sept. 30 a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit this area and caused mass devastation Homes, malls, hotels and hospitals all were crushed by this quake. Full Story

Craigslist ad fraud costs victim $9,000
Island County Sheriff's deputies on Camano Island responded to the following recently: • A woman on N. Sunrise Boulevard reported on Oct. 3 that she had been defrauded out of $9,354 since Sept. 21. The victim responded to a Craigslist ad for a market research position with a company located in the United Kingdom. Full Story
Wilfred
Wilfred is an 8-year-old blue heeler mix at CASA. When Wilfred came to the shelter he was unable to walk because he was so over weight. The staff had to help Wilfred stand up with a lift harness just to use the bathroom. Wilfred has been on a very strict diet and is losing weight every week. He can now walk on his own. LCDR JAMES A. VYSKOCIL
1921 - 2009
US Navy (Ret) LCDR James Albrecht Vyskocil, 88, of Burlington, passed away Oct. 2, 2009. Known to many as "Mr. V," James, was a 33- year Navy veteran and survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Mr. Vyskocil fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, enduring five sea battles and three aircraft crashes. Full Story

Doris E. Peterson, 80, of East Stanwood, died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009. Doris was born Aug. 15, 1929 to Jack and Myrtle Sill. She was a lifetime resident of Stanwood. Doris was a member of the American Legion for 57 years. Full Story
RONALD PAUL FREY
Ronald Paul Frey passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Oct. 4, 2009. He is now home with his Heavenly Father. Love defined his life as a husband, father, son, brother and friend. Ron was born on Sept. 12, 1932 in Meadow Grove, Nebraska, to Lester and Ophie Frey. The family moved to Bellevue, Wash. in 1936. Full Story
