Car crashes into downtown building killing one man

By KRISTI PIHL Staff Reporter

A one-car rollover accident left one man dead and two injured in Stanwood early Sunday morning.

A vehicle crashed into the Thomas Professional Building on 271st Street NW in downtown Stanwood at 12:30 a.m. Sunday. The three occupants were all Stanwood-area men in their 20s, said Stanwood Police Chief Ty Trenary.

The 28-year-old driver was declared dead at the scene, said Darin Reid, deputy chief of Stanwood- Camano Fire Department.

Crews cut the roof of the car off to get the front passenger out of the vehicle, Reid said. He was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in critical condition.

He is expected to survive, Trenary said.

The third man, the backseat passenger, was out of the vehicle when responders arrived, Reid said. However, they were unsure if he was thrown from the vehicle in the crash or if he had crawled out. He had minor injuries and was transported to Skagit Valley Hospital.

Speed and alcohol are suspected contributing factors in the accident, Trenary said. However, the incident is under investigation by the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office Collision Investigation Team.

Thomas Professional Building sustained some minor damage, Reid said.

Camano Island Fire and Rescue, Stanwood-Camano Fire Department and Stanwood Police responded to the accident.
