Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon is the speaker for the Stanwood Democrats at the Viking Restaurant, Sat., Oct. 10, 10 a.m. The public is invited to join them for a no-host breakfast and coffee before the meeting begins, which is scheduled to end at 11. Republican women welcome radio host

Kirby Wilbur, morning host on 570 KVI, will be guest speaker at the Thurs., Oct. 15 meeting of the Evergreen Republican Women's Club. Chamber's October general meeting

Thurs., Oct. 8, the Stanwood Chamber of Commerce will meet 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Stanwood Camano School District Admin Bldg. Stanwood High School's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) will be featured speakers. There is a cost for the catered lunch.

Free septic workshop in Stanwood

A free, "lively" workshop on caring for septic systems will be Sat., Oct. 17, 10 a.m. to noon at the Stanwood PUD office, 9124 271st St. NW. Teri King, who spearheads many water quality programs for the University of Washington SeaGrant program in Hood Canal, will help people learn about system types, how they operate, and how to protect them and possibly extend their life. She will cover what is safe to put down the drain and how to keep a system in good working order, as well as tips for landscaping and covering unsightly components. This class is educational only and not part of Island County's septic certification program. The workshop is being offered by Snohomish Conservation District with funding from the Department of Ecology Centennial Clean Water fund. PSAT to be administered October 17

Stanwood High School will be administering the PSAT Sat., Oct. 17, 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. There is a cost. Receipts must be turned in to the counseling center in order to be registered and to receive a practice test. Open registration began Monday on a first-come basis. Running Start students must have taken the PSAT in their sophomore year in order to qualify for National Merit consideration. Set aside date for eating lutefisk

The 57th Stanwood Lions Club lutefisk dinner will be Sun., Oct. 25, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Stanwood High School. There is a cost, with children under age 7 free; all you can eat, family style. "We look forward to renewing old and meeting new acquaintances," say the Lions who will be cooking the dinner. For additional information, contact chairman Jim Lund, 629-3604.

F inancial advisor hosts broadcast

Edward Jones financial advisor Jerry Van Vliet of Stanwood will host a free broadcast titled, "Cutting through the noise: a market update," at 7208 267th Street NW, Suite 102, Stanwood, Tues., Oct. 13., 3:30 p.m. During this interactive program, Alan Skrainka, Edward Jones' chief market strategist, will discuss the current state of the economy and financial markets and provide strategies to help investors keep perspective. This interactive event is presented at select Edward Jones branch offices nationwide via the firm's private video network. Senior community invites public to eat

An all-you-can-eat country breakfast will be served at Beachwood Lounge, Warm Beach Senior Community Sat., Oct. 10, 8 to 10 a.m. Menu includes waffles, biscuits and sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, ham, fruit, juice and coffee. A guest speaker will be at the 11 a.m. meeting of the Friends of the Library Tues., Oct. 13 at the Stanwood library, 9701 271st St. NW. Members of the community are invited to come learn more about the library and how it helps the community.

Gardeners to host speaker on birds

Wed., Oct. 14, Virginia Clark will talk about birds in Washington state, as guest speaker for the Greenwood Garden Club at Warm Beach Community Church (basement Fellowship Hall), 9620 188th St. NW. P anel discussion about food by farmers

The 2009 Stanwood Camano Together We Read series presents "Together We Eat," a panel discussion by local farmers and "foodies" Thurs., Oct. 8, 7 p.m. at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center, 27130 102nd Ave NW, Stanwood. The panel will discuss issues raised in this year's reading selection, "Plenty: Eating Locally on the 100 Mile Diet," by Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon.

Families invited to paint pumpkins

Pumpkin Painting at the Williams Pioneer Pumpkin Patch, Sat., Oct. 10, 1-3 p.m. Families are invited to pick a pumpkin from the vine to paint and create; pumpkins and paints will be provided by the Stanwood Library free of charge. To get to the pumpkin patch, take Stanwood/Camano I-5 exit 212, to SR 532 West. At the fourth light, turn south on 88th. The pumpkin farm is across from the Stanwood park-n-ride.

Free class on winterizing gardens

L ive music at the Stanwood Hotel

Nursery extends scarecrow contest

The scarecrow contest at Christian's Nursery has been extended, and entries must be submitted by Fri., Oct.16. Your scarecrow will be exhibited in the esplanade at the front of the nursery and the public is invited to vote for their favorite interpretation of this Autumnal Icon. The winning entry will receive a $100 gift certificate to be awarded Oct. 30.
