Local swimmers capsize Royals at home
Head swim coach Rita Brennan gushed with pride while describing her Spartan girls' aquatic achievements last week. "Lynnwood was our first home meet and our girls were heard cheering all the way over at the Everett Clinic. Pelham, Weinert switch places in backto back XC meets
Mark Pelham and Wade Weinert took turns posting best times for Stanwood High on two different crosscountry courses last week. Pelham, a senior, led the local contingent against the likes of Glacier Peak, Arlington and Marysville- Pilchuck while Weinert, a sophomore, had the best Spartan time at the Bellevue Invitational over the weekend. Girls' XC times among best marks in the state
Stanwood's female cross country contingent took third place in a quadruple meet on Thursday and then, individually, turned in some impressive times and places at the Bellevue Invitational on Saturday. Minna Fields easily paced the field in last week's quad meet with Glacier Peak (34 points), Arlington (48) and Marysville-Pilchuck (93). Full Story

Strong doubles play secured three victories for the resurgent Spartan boys' tennis team (5-3 in league and overall) last week as they edged Monroe 4-3, whipped the Lake Stevens Vikings 6-1 and thumped Arlington 5-2 in WesCo 4A North play. Full Story

Spartan soccer team shuts out Cascade Bruins
Stanwood's Lady Spartan soccer team (2-3-1) won one, lost one and tied one during last week's busy WesCo 4A North schedule. They began the week with a 2-0 shutout of the Cascade Bruins behind the net-minding of sophomore Haley Haugstad and the two-goal scoring of Brandi Doggett. Spartan gridders lose to Tomahawks
The Sparts just couldn't stop him. Marysville-Pilchuck used the swiftness and elusiveness of senior running back Austin Denton, who accumulated 233 yards in 21 carries, to hold Stanwood (0-2 in league, 0-4 overall) at bay as they beat the locals 42-7 Friday night. Full Story
High netters edge Mountlake Terrace in marathon match
After dropping the third and fourth sets, the Spartan high netters had to settle in, re-establish their communication skills and play hardnosed volleyball to eventually overtake Mountlake Terrace 3-2 in a non-league encounter last week. Full Story
