Hotels permitted under new Camano Gateway ordinance
Gas station, convenience store application grandfathered
The Island County Board of Commissioners unanimously passed an ordinance Tuesday that permits hotels in the Camano Gateway, but prohibits convenience stores and gas stations. The ordinance creates the Camano Gateway Village Zone, and lays out permitted property uses and design standards. Full Story
SnoCo's research on tidal energy receives $600,000
Part of a multi-year research effort on the potential of tidal energy by Snohomish County Public Utility District, PUD will receive $600,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy Focused on Admiralty Inlet, the funds will be used to help determine potential effects of tidal energy turbines on aquatic life in the Puget Sound. Eagle Scout
Tylor John Lowery of Boy Scout Troop no. 86 in Stanwood, is pictured with Steve Andrews after being awarded the highest rank in Boy Scouts, that of Eagle Scout. The Court of Honor ceremony was Sun., Aug. 30 on Camano Island. His family, friends, fellow scouts and scout masters, were present to see the culmination of 11 years of hard work including service projects, volunteering, leadership, events and outings that included four, 50-mile excursions with the troop. Tylor also earned 28 merit badges in addition to performing his Eagle Scout service project, which was renovating the yard at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center in Stanwood. Planning, organizing and implementing, Tylor supervised the many scouts and parents of Troop 86 in cleaning up the flowerbeds and installing a rockery border. A 2009 graduate of Stanwood High School, Tylor is currently attending UTI in Goodyear, Ariz. for heavy diesel mechanics, automotive and refrigeration. Full Story
Options reduce wait times at state licensing offices
The state Department of Licensing has installed self service stations in 30 licensing service offices (LSOs) around the state, so customers can skip the wait and take care of many routine licensing transactions quickly and easily. Full Story
New owners at Camano Island Inn
New owners Ajit and Ambili Sukesan have have added three new rooms, a spa and a bistro, at Camano Island Inn making it more like a resort than a bed and breakfast. With the remodel, the new bistro is Camano Island's only waterfront dining with views of the Olympic Mountains and Saratoga Passage. Full Story

Educators, anglers and hunters are wanted by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission for its Boating Safety Advisory Council. The deadline for submitting nominations is Oct. 12. Full Story
